Chop Sue Me is a depression driven rock n’ roll machine. Satire and trashy guitar pop music is what they’re offering. Montreal based Jonathan Theriault, Antoine Morin and David Roy are here to do what everyone else is doing: make rock music and expect to be paid for it.
This project started out as a bedroom solo effort by Jonathan back in 2018. Producing and recording demos for ‘Afraid’ and other early songs, he was joined by Antoine Morin 3 weeks before their first show. The original idea being an acoustic rendition of their repertoire, Antoine brought in Philippe Gingras to play the drums, and this lineup remained for an entire year and a half (also marked by the passage of Olivier Pouliot on the lead guitar for some time as well). David Roy (Thick Glasses, Slouch) started drumming for the band in July 2020.
The trio released a home-recorded single in December 2019, featuring ‘Afraid’ with ‘E=McDonald’s’ as the B-side. It was recorded between Jonathan’s apartment, Lionel-Groulx College’s music aisle and Philippe’s parent’s garage. No one knew what they were doing but ultimately managed to play the producers well enough to put out a respectable demo for the world to listen to.
With the pandemic and the (temporary) death of the music industry as we know it, different projects are about to see the light of day for the Montreal outfit. First, a Blogotheque-style live film is set to be shot in September by Nathan Jomphe and Penelope Turgeon. The streets being the only safe space these days, people have found joy in being together in the open (at safe proximity, please) and the idea of playing publicly and clandestinely is an attractive approach to live shows for the time being.
In the meantime, the band is working on an EP/mini album set to be published when life allows it somewhere in 2021. Why should you be excited? It will feature songs that for now only show-goers have heard but never made it on tape.
