Based in Nashville, Tennessee, John Laprade first made waves as a founding member of the New York City power pop band Astro Chicken alongside songwriter Barney Miller and his brother Michael. Signed to Honey Darling and Meaningful Records, throughout the 90s and early 2000s the outfit was a staple of the New York music scene, winning over fans around the world and attracting attention from media such as the NY Daily News, Mojo Magazine and Hits Magazine.
However it wasn’t until 2008 when John Laprade fully realised his own sonic vision with the release of his debut solo EP Blind followed by his first full-length record with 2011’s album World-Class Faker via Lost Satellite Records. Recorded between a New York studio and a bedroom in Alfred, on his first album the artist was joined by a host of friends of local musicians including the renowned guitarist Richard Lloyd of Television and drummer Rich Pagano of The Fab Faux.
Now after more than a decade, he makes his highly anticipated return with his brand new EP titled Giving up the Ghost, once again released via the Lost Satellite Records imprint. Featuring five new songs, on his new EP John Laprade shares the very best of his timeless singer-songwriter sound.
Capturing the essence of early Freedy Johnston, Neil Finn and Wilco, across the EP the artist loosely recounts his reluctant exit from the increasingly corporatised and faceless New York City culture where he’d lived for over twenty-five years. With Giving up the Ghost John Laprade finds closure with his departure from a place he’s called home for so long, delivered through charming alternative country pop songs.
Produced, record and mixed by Chris Cubeta and Gary Atturio at Studio G in Brooklyn, on Giving up the Ghost John Laprade lays down stunning vocal harmonies, warming instrumentation and his hopeful lyricism to craft a delightful new EP that sees him pick up where he left off with a reflective and enjoyable new release.
