Deleo‘s new debut album The Best Is Yet To Be, released via the My Own Records imprint, is a cosmic and ferocious journey through the stratosphere of indie rock, shoegaze, and new wave. Led by founder and guitarist Denis Navarro, the French band has wholly captured their dazzling sonic vision on the record across eleven songs that lay down their captivating rock sound.
The album starts with the nervous energy of “Notice,” where Felicien’s hypnotic basslines, Ben’s pounding drums, and Denis’s roaring guitar riffs blend together to create an energetic and engaging opening. This energy is followed by the hauntingly beautiful vocals of Emilie on “You Feel,” which serves up new wave tones wrapped up in Deleo’s distinct style revealing the band’s knack for infusing dark rock with dance-pop.
One of the standout tracks on the album is “Satellite”, previously released as a lead single, which is imbued with a sense of otherworldliness and mystery, taking the listener on a journey through the cosmos. The track features pulsating electronic beats and ethereal vocals that add to the song’s enchanting quality.
Throughout the album, Deleo demonstrates their versatility and mastery of multiple genres, fusing elements of rock, pop, and electronic music into a cohesive and distinctive sound. This is particularly evident in the track “Lonesome Traveler”, which resides in the darker part of the album, with moody guitars, atmospheric synths, and a driving rhythm section that combine to create a brooding and introspective mood.
The production on the album, arranged by Philippe Uminski, is impeccable, and captures the intensity and energy of Deleo’s live performances. Uminski’s arrangements highlight the strengths of the band, emphasising their impressive musicianship and adding a sonic depth to the songs.
The Best Is Yet To Be is a truly impressive debut album from Deleo and demonstrates the band’s ability to create a cohesive and distinctive sound that is both introspective and energetic. With their blend of dark rock and dance-pop, Deleo has carved out a unique space in the indie rock genre, and it’s clear that the best is yet to come for this talented group.
