Here it is! It’s March! While we are all waiting for the first warm(ish) days to come and peel off those fuzzy winter coats, two American guys have already made the record that is going to soundtrack this years’ fuzzy-winter-coat-peeling World Championship.
On their fabulous debut LP “Forever”, the San Francisco duo churn out some of the brightest, summery psychtronica heard in a long time. Warm analogue synths, surfy guitars, reverb everywhere and oh those candy melodies. The Beach Boys come to mind, as do Tame Impala and Animal Collective. The whole record sounds like a wave of sunlight and some of the songs might even come across as radio-friendly, such as the obvious highlight “Spinning Signs”. The punching groove and the slamming chorus make that tune by far the best of the record. But that doesn’t mean the rest of the record is class B material.
It’s pretty exciting what Painted Palms have to offer here. From the bizarrely hyperactive opening track “Too High” on you know you’re in for a treat. It’s hard to really capture what’s going on here because of all the washy effects and the sheer richness of it all, but once you dive into the Palms’ sonic ocean you’ll be able to learn to breathe along with the music and fully embrace the Tsunami of noise and effects coming your way.
What makes this even more impressive is that Painted Palms completed the record just by sending each other MP3 files over the internet and slowly completing the songs that way.
So get a hold of this, and let it wash you away.
