“Imagine being whisked away to a world of dreamy psychedelia” – sometimes the best description of a bands sound comes from the band themselves, and ‘Gulf’ for sure hit the nail on the head with there’s. ‘Gulf’ are a five piece band from Liverpool who burst with originality, though they note themselves to be influenced by Liverpool’s well known creative heritage, despite not tying in with the current scene itself.
The benefits of being a five piece band are the variety of musical influences brought to the table, which the band appear to have fused together. This week they’ve premiered their new track ‘Emitter’, which is a stand out track that I believe an entirely new genre could be created for, just to categorise it; it’s a combination of pop, psych, disco, hip hop, and even funk.
In a day and age where everybody feels the need to make constant comparisons, it’s difficult this time round because the band really are so fresh. It’s interesting to see a band with three guitarists, as it’s lead to a spectacular end result of them playing around, seeing what works, and what sound they can create. With the combination of Jones’ smooth vocals, including the lyrical depth of them (“I’m falling and there’s nothing left to do”), and woozy guitars, ‘Gulf’ have a similar vibe to that of ‘Tame Impala’, and describe themselves to be similar to bands such as ‘Childhood’ and ‘The Horrors’.
My first listen of ‘Emitter’ gave me an instant summer vibe, which oddly enough I believe could quite easily also be the soundtrack of a lazy rainy day indoors. It’s no surprise that ‘Gulf’ are attracting attention and interest (‘Emitter’ is one of NME’s ’20 Tracks You Need To Hear This Week’), with the track being the perfect combination of guitars, synthetics, vocals, and prominent drum beats, all complimenting each other, a bit like a Gin and Tonic. The band describe themselves as creative in other areas, and this definitely shines through on ‘Emitter’, I can’t remember the last time instruments screamed perfection as much as they do on this track. So come on then, who doesn’t love a Gin and Tonic? Check the bands Social Media pages and SoundCloud page below.
