One of the most sought out records this Record Store day was Johnny Marr’s limited edition 7″ featuring his cover of Depeche Mode’s 1993 classic ‘I Feel You’ as the A-Side, and a live rendition of Smiths favourite ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ from his show at the Manchester Apollo last October as the B-Side.
Speaking about ‘I Feel You’ which Johnny and his band first played in a dressing room on his American tour towards the end of last year, before sprucing it up in a soundcheck and playing it live that same night, Johnny shared his firm belief regarding the importance of bringing something of yourself to it when you cover a track. It definitely appears that him and his band succeeded in that – the track sounds intense and raw, and Johnny’s signature jangly guitar compliments it perfectly without straying too far from the original. It’s an incredibly atmospheric track to the point that is almost sounds live.
The Smiths and Johnny fans will be incredibly pleased with the B-Side ‘Please Please Please Let Me Get What I Want’ which is a beautiful live rendition that really captures how special Johnny’s latest homecoming show was. It’s a wonderful version of the track and Johnny’s main guitar solo in particular sounds absolutely sublime.
No need to worry if you missed out on snapping a copy up on Record Store Day as both tracks are now available digitally both on iTunes and Amazon Download, as well as to stream via Spotify and Soundcloud.
