Formed in 2013, the Moon Kids are a band from Dunfermline, Scotland. The band describe their sound as electrifying pop that sounds like fireworks, neon lights and fairground thrills – ‘Fairground Pop’ if you will. Their first official release ‘The Moon Kids EP’ conveyed exactly this, receiving attention from the national press and gaining radio play, with the added success that the track ‘Luna Park’ was selected for the finals of the International Songwriting Competition 2014 just last month!
My favourite thing about the Moon Kids is that they’re really putting their own individual stamp on the music scene. It’s difficult to confine them to one specific genre and their youthful energetic sound is incredibly refreshing. I for one can’t remember the last time that I heard a band and didn’t compare one of their attributes to that of another musicians. The band’s latest single ‘Strange Thoughts on Sunday’ has been named single of the week on BBC Radio Scotland by Janice Forsyth, and it’s easy to see why! Jim Gellatly has also featured the single as a breakout track on XFM Scotland.
If you’re slightly confused or intrigued about the idea of a ‘Fairground Pop’ genre then you’ll understand within the first 10 seconds of listening to ‘Strange Thoughts on Sunday’. The adrenaline driven track is a perfect combination of guitar and twinkling indie pop melodies, which you can really appreciate during the fantastic instrumental around one minute and a half in to the track.
The band are currently working on their first album, but you can download ‘Strange Thoughts on Sunday’ from iTunes here. You can also download ‘The Moon Kids EP’ here.
