At the start of 2015 Jamie Morrison of Stereophonics presented an astonishing musical project called Drewford Alabama to the world, releasing two EP’s. Jamie’s inspiration came from a book of lyrics written by a Drewford Alabama that he discovered in the lining of a piece of luggage he bought in Williamsburg, New York. There couldn’t be a more beautiful story behind Jamie’s inspiration, and both that beauty and Jamie’s passion shines so brightly in both EP’s. After being captivated by previous EP ‘Time Is On Your Side’ which I chose as one of my favourite singles of 2015 in a recent article, I was thrilled to be introduced to ‘I Go To Sleep’.
‘I Go To Sleep’ is somewhat of a thank you gesture to the people who showed love and support towards the Drewford Alabama project throughout 2015, which is an incredibly heartwarming gesture to make. It’s been fantastic to see the support Drewford Alabama has received, with ‘Time Is On Your Side’ being played on Radio 1, Radio 2 and BBC London, as well as gaining a place on playlists such as XFM’s ‘Best 5 Songs of the Week’.
Ray Davis of The Kinks originally wrote the song though it found fame with The Pretenders. When Jamie reached the final page of Drewford Alabama’s notebook, the only line was “Now I go to sleep..” – Jamie believes this line to be the start of a poem or even a short story and was instantly reminded of the track which he was first introduced to in 2002 whilst playing with Sia, where it featured prominently on her set list.
The third installment of the Drewford Alabama story features an impressive line up of guest artists such as The Lost Brothers, Florence and the Machine’s harpist Tom Monger and Drew McConnell who has worked with both Helsinki and Babyshambles. Jamie has collaborated with The Lost Brothers in the past and both wanted a male perspective on the track that Chrissie Hynde brought fame too, and to take a slightly different direction with it. The Lost Brothers are known for their harmonious vocal style and Jamie was spot on in thinking that it would perfectly compliment the idyllic world of Drewford Alabama.
‘I Go To Sleep’ has a gorgeous dream like quality to it, which Jamie himself believes to be aided by the tracks recording which took place on a boat floating down the River Thames – most definitely the recording experience such a stunning track deserves. The vocals are sublime and sit perfectly alongside the angelic sounds of Tom Monger’s harp. I can confidently say that Jamie has really struck gold with ‘I Go To Sleep.
If you haven’t heard ‘I Go To Sleep’ yet then I highly recommend it, you can find it on iTunes here.
