New York-based Lo-Fi music producer Past Palms blends ambient soundscapes, warm nature samples, and bass-heavy beats to craft his minimal electronic sound. His music aims to encapsulate the feeling of surrounding yourself with an oasis of tropical houseplants while living in a grey, nature-less city.
The self-descried “plant-inspired” artist just released the new song Rainwater, as the lead single from the forthcoming Vernal EP. The new track launched via a premiere from leading electronic music outlet Mixmag, who wrote, “The New York-based producer is steadily building a reputation for crafting lush soundscapes imbued with an organic sense of tranquillity, and ‘Rainwater’ is another blissed-out (and low-key danceable) triumph.”
Inspired by the likes of Burial, Four Tet and Clams Casino, Rainwater features downtempo dance rhythms and lush, tropical ambience. The track exhibits new territory for Past Palms, with dance-inflected beats and a more expansive song structure. Sweeping synths and blooming vocal samples elegantly glisten and glide over clicking beats, nodding both to the artist’s penchant for creating ethereal atmospheres as well as his more rhythmically focused inspirations.
The upcoming EP represents the changing of seasons from winter to spring, and the darkness and light that intertwine along the way. Vernal is a testament to the bittersweet contrast of witnessing new flowers begin to bud, all while the cold effects of winter continue to linger.
