The Garden is the fourth mainline release from UK Electronic duo Yard Nule which consists of Ben Griffith and Hugh Vincent, both multi-instrumentalists who emerged through very different musical disciplines. Finally meeting when commissioned to write the 8-Bit music for dance-musical piece Quest.
Ben grew up through the 90s garage and drum and bass movement but always had a strong connection to the folk-world through his family. Hugh studied classical and Jazz music before discovering electronic music through his work with Electro-pop project Litany.
Yard Nule started off as a fantasy realm the pair invented in the hazy small hours of the morning after performing together in night-clubs, “we would come up with leitmotifs for various characters or places in this world we called Yard Nule – it was both hilarious and exciting but we both felt like something bigger was emerging from that.”
The Garden is an electro-acoustic ecosystem full of mysteries and wonders; it fuses the disciplines of modern production and impeccable musicianship to create a vast sonic space for the listener to explore. Succeeding both as a dreamy audio backdrop as well as an astute composition of rhythm and melodic trial, the piece can strike a chord with any listener and provide an array of desired outcomes for all listening perspectives.

The track features a massive collage of instruments and recording techniques such as sampling percussion from rare west-African records, using a Theremin, the Prophet synthesizer, a beat up Yamaha DX7, Flutes, Guitars, Tabla and Yard Nule’s calling card of blending a real drum kit with electronic layers to create a unique percussive offering.
“In the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, we moved online to finish The Garden and decided it would be incredible to feature some of our good friends on the piece, so you hear contributions from some incredible UK jazz musicians – Matt Cliffe of Ancient Infinity Orchestra on Flute, Daniel Kemshell on electric guitar, Nel Begley’s vocals and Arthur Newell’s percussion. This has been an incredibly heart-warming piece and to finish it with the talents of our friends is super special.“
The duo is also working alongside visual artist Jake Hollings to craft a fantastical realm for the music to breathe in. Each piece is given its own visual identity and place in Yard Nule. “We want to follow an unusual release structure: to build up a gallery of visual and sonic pieces so the listener can find their own favourite places within the ever-growing world of Yard Nule.”
