Inwards, the Worcestershire-based artist and producer, has just released a new single, “Retrograde,” lifted from his upcoming album, All The Things You Left Behind. Known for his playfully edgy yet deep and emotive productions that draw on found sounds, modular synths, and a myriad of electronic and acoustic instruments, Inwards has been captivating fans and tastemakers alike.
“Retrograde” is the second cut from his forthcoming record, and it offers a peaceful respite from the world beyond what we can control. The track is essentially a time capsule back to Inwards’ headspace at a specific point in his story. This is a common thread through many of Inwards’ tracks, due to the instinctive and often urgent way in which he approaches his music-making. “Retrograde” is a vivid, cathartic sonic snapshot of his state of mind at the time.
Inwards’ distinctive style has earned him numerous accolades and praise, and his work has been heavily supported across the media in the UK and beyond. His 2020 second album, Bright Serpent, received a glowing review from MOJO magazine, and he ‘s been featured in Resident Advisor, The Independent, Electronic Sound, Clash, DUMMY and The 405, among others. BBC 6 Music, Radio X and BBC Introducing have given him heavy airtime in the UK, while Selector Radio, Soho Radio, Foundation FM, KCRW,and NPR have also supported him.
With All The Things You Left Behind, Inwards is set to showcase his first body of work to emerge on his own label, Rainbow Bridge, as he cultivates new beginnings from deep roots. The new label is a collaborative venture between Kristian Shelley and Vlad Matveikov, the head of Brighton-based music company Small Pond and a long-time champion of Inwards’ music. Small Pond recently announced that their label arm is winding up operations after several years of impeccable, eclectic and exciting releases.
“The songs on this album were chosen from what we refer to as the Inwards Archives-basically a playlist within the region of 150 unreleased Inwards tracks on. These tracks range from songs made in different times and places over the last decade, from 2013 right up until last year. We felt that it’s important to release some of these tunes that are growing older, and share them with the world”, he shares.
Adding, “It’s a weird concept thinking about it. These are all tunes that I felt did not fit on to previous Inwards records, for one reason or another. So now, let’s put them on an Inwards record! Some of these songs are really interesting for me to listen to now. I expect that we will follow this record up with more unreleased Inwards tunes in the form of a similar album, maybe an endless amount of“All The Things…”volumes. In the meantime, new tunes are being made and are forming brand new Inwards records, and the ones that slip through the cracks that I think are not quite fitting with the new Inwards sound at the time, will fall into the inwards archives, maybe gather some dust fora few years, and then make it out into the world as fully formed tunes when their time comes.”
“Retrograde” is a masterful track that showcases Inwards’ signature sound. The track starts with a subtle, pulsating beat that builds in intensity as the song progresses. The ethereal textures and atmospheric synths create a dreamy, otherworldly soundscape that takes the listener on a journey through space and time. The track’s hypnotic rhythm and intricate layers of sound create a sense of weightlessness, allowing the listener to lose themselves in the music and escape the world around them.
Overall, “Retrograde” is a stunning piece of music that highlights Inwards’ incredible talent and unique style. The track is a beautiful blend of electronic sounds and modular synths that create a truly immersive listening experience. Fans of electronic music, ambient soundscapes, and experimental music will find much to love in “Retrograde” and the artist’s upcoming LP.
