Canadian indie pop duo Wotts continue to dazzle listeners with their infectious writing and vibrant, upbeat sound. With their latest single, “blue,” the Ottawa-based act showcase their evolution and versatility, delving into a more melodic and sonically laid-back direction while maintaining their signature catchy hooks and pop aesthetics.
“blue” is the second release lifted from their upcoming EP, titled garden, and it marks a departure from their traditional retro, 80s-inspired pop songs. The track takes inspiration from fellow Canadian outfit Men I Trust, infusing a bright and breezy energy that perfectly captures the essence of the Spring season. It serves as a reminder to trust the path you’re on, adding a touch of uplifting meaning to their instantly catchy sound.
The song opens with delicate detuned instrumental tones, accompanied by processed piano shots that creates a dreamy atmosphere underpinned by a grooving bass line that provides a solid foundation. The colourful lead guitar licks and intricate array of synths and electronic textures add layers of depth to the composition around Wotts’ vocals, carried by their signature dreamy delivery, intertwined seamlessly with the hook-filled melodic writing, resulting in an uplifting and infectious summer-ready jam.
While the duo’s sound has historically paid homage to the aesthetics of the 80s, “blue” demonstrates their willingness to explore new sonic territories. They embrace the creative process as a means of growth and experimentation, finding inspiration in various sub-genres of pop music; their main aim is to make music they enjoy themselves, and that attitude has translated into a sonic offering that’s won over like-minded fans around the world.
Produced by Wotts member Jayem, “blue” is part of a trilogy of tracks that the band has carefully curated. While the first instalment, “wheel,” explored themes of mortality, “blue” shifts the focus to finding one’s way in life. Spring serves as a significant inspiration for the duo, symbolising new beginnings and a sense of rebirth.
The sepia-toned cinematic quality of “blue” is infused by the glistening pianos and orchestral strings, creating an atmospheric backdrop that enhances the song’s delightfully hazy sound. As we eagerly await the release of their upcoming EP, Wotts continues to impress with their catchy melodies, relatable lyrics and charming indie pop sound. With “blue,” they invite us into their sonic universe, where dreamy atmospheres and irresistible hooks intertwine to create an immersive and unforgettable musical experience. Keep an eye on Wotts as they establish themselves as rising stars in the indie pop landscape.
