Experimental hyperpop artist hailing from Manchester, Norrisette brings us her latest release with her brand new EP, Weird Party. Making music and videos from her tiny flat, Norrisette’s journey began with her first live gig supporting Sylvette at Deaf Institute in 2021. Since then, she’s graced the Nebula Stage at Bluedot Festival and performed at various headline gigs in Manchester. In addition to her own musical endeavours, Norrisette co-founded FLUFF, a regular night dedicated to queer electronic music producers. FLUFF has gained recognition in the underground music scene in Manchester, even being featured in The Guardian for its significant contributions.
If you’re a fan of FKA Twigs, Kate Bush, James Blake, Björk, SOPHIE, or appreciate the unconventional sounds, Norrisette is an artist you need to discover. Norrisette’s DIY approach is evident in her music, which she creates entirely from scratch in her living space. The perfect introduction to her sound is Norrisette’s latest offering, a collection of her six best tracks that embody her unique sound; each track on the EP showcases Norrisette’s quintessential boundary-pushing electronic style.
From the moment the furious synth assault of “Metal Hotel” blasts through the speakers, listeners are primed for the mind-bending and kaleidoscopic sonic journey that lies ahead. The haunting vocal arrangements and minimalistic production of “Wild Being” evoke a sense of urgency in response to the cost of living crisis. “Prometheus” takes a more dance-focused approach, with its infectious shuffling beat and ethereal vocal textures.
The jarring soundscape of “Whale House” captures the listeners’ attention, providing an intriguing and unsettling experience. The track is a tongue-in-cheek collaboration with Artificial Intelligence software trained solely on Norrisette’s music, resulting in a fascinating fusion of human creativity and technological experimentation. “Fluffwerk” pays tribute to FLUFF, the night of queer electronica co-founded by the artist. The track exudes soft yet driving drums and warbling instrumentation, creating a captivating sonic landscape.
The EP concludes with “A Quiet Death,” a poignant and elegantly avant-garde ballad that showcases Norrisette’s exceptional songwriting talent. With her vocals gracefully floating over a delicate piano backing, the track explores the theme of grieving the loss of a partner. It serves as a fitting end to the journey, leaving listeners in a pensive state of reflection.
Weird Party is a truly groundbreaking EP that showcases the breadth of Norrisette’s unrivalled sonic vision. Each track is an energising, fascinating, tender and at times a bizarre exploration of sound, in all the right ways. Norrisette fearlessly tests the limits of genre, delivering a consistently thrilling experience for listeners. With her DIY ethos and uncompromising commitment to her creative pursuit, Norrisette has cemented herself as an artist to watch. Weird Party is a testament to her talent and creativity, leaving us eager to witness her future musical endeavours.
