We caught up with Oli Ng to find out more about his inspirations, his debut album Everything Is Impossible Until It Happens and what he’s got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with Oli Ng below.
Hey Oli, how’s things?
Hello! Things a great thank you, busy!
How did you first get into making your own music?
After I’d been doing a few gigs in my high school band, and playing covers a lot, it got to a point where we thought ‘lets make our own!’ so it kind of went from there really.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
The Boss. Springsteen, without a shadow of a doubt. I remember hearing the song ‘Mary’s Place’ for the first time, and thinking “I want to do THAT.”
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from today?
I listen to a lot of music, of all genres really! So these days my inspirations can come from whatever I’m listening to at that moment.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
Mainly from day to life and experiences I or the people around me go through. My music is very personal, rather than fictional or character based. Although, that sort of writing is something I would like to explore one day!
What do you love about your local music scene?
That everybody knows everybody, it’s like a community. I have to admit, it’s not what it used to be in my area, especially after the closure of a few venues and the pandemic but there are some exciting new bands popping up all the time now, so the future is bright!
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
Wow. That’s a tough one! I think this record especially has the potential for either putting your best headphones on and sitting down in a comfortable chair, and taking it in that way or, rolling the window down on the car on a sunny day and turning it UP! (but still driving responsibly, of course!)
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
I think it’s got a lot more mature, naturally as I’ve got older. I think that reflects how I’ve learned my craft a bit more now.
How did you find making your debut album ‘Everything Is Impossible Until It Happens’?
I loved every second of it. I’ve always been more of a live performer, and not really connected with the recording process, but this process was amazing. It was quite sad when it came to an end actually!
What was most challenging about making a full-length release for the first time?
Picking what made it and what didn’t! For the first time, I had too many songs! That as well as having the pressure of doing everything ourselves as it was a self released release, but it was a great team effort!
What message did you want to get across with this release?
I think the title says it all really. Don’t ever think you can’t do anything, and never give up. And if things aren’t going the right way right now, don’t worry because things will be alright.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Novo Amor recently, as I went to see them a few weeks ago.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
If my music connects with anybody and helps them either feel better, or better their life in some way, I’ll be a happy man. Music should be a force for good and an escape.
What’s been your favourite live show so far?
That’s too hard to choose! Probably one of the European shows I’ve done over the years, the fans out there are always so welcoming and attentive!
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
You like these tough ones don’t you! I think it would have to be Bruce Springsteen, The Beatles and Pearl Jam. Where? My back garden, why not!
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Just stick at it. Get out and play as much as you can, meet as many people as you can and just be nice to people. Someone once told me that if you’re good to people on the way up, they’ll be there for you if you ever come down and I believe that.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
We’ve got some Festivals in over the Summer, and then plan to tour the UK and Europe in the Autumn!
