Isak’s Island, the artistic project of songwriter and guitarist Aksel Undset, brings us his latest release with his new single titled “Someone I’d Recognise.” With its intimate and nourishing soundscapes, Isak’s Island transports listeners to a world reminiscent of iconic songwriters like Nick Drake and Leonard Cohen while maintaining its own unique originality.
“Someone I’d Recognise” beautifully tells the story of a romantic relationship set against the backdrop of London’s streets and venues during Aksel’s time in the city. The song captures a particular moment in time, evoking a sense of nostalgia and longing. Aksel’s forthcoming self-produced record, Fallen Anchors On The Sea Bed, featuring Herman Wildhagen, reflects this introspective journey and showcases Aksel’s talents on guitar, mandolin and vocals. The album also features the soulful vocals of partner Brooke Sharkey, the delicate melodies of Håkon Aase’s strings, Leo Geller on bass and Åsmund Skjeldal Waage on vibraphone.
Isak’s Island’s musical journey began with the space-rock EP Peculiar Calls From Outer Space in 2013, where Aksel showcased his multi-instrumental skills and production prowess. Relocating to London that same year, Aksel assembled a live band for the project, captivating audiences with their performances across the city. Since then, the project has evolved toward the alternative folk genre, releasing two more EPs and the debut album Songs For Winter in 2021. Their extensive touring has taken them across the UK, Ireland, France, Italy, Spain and their native Norway.
“Someone I’d Recognise” serves as a tantalising preview of the artist’ forthcoming album. The song unfolds with delicate acoustic tones and subtle percussion, providing a gentle backdrop for Aksel’s mesmerising vocals. As the song progresses, it reaches a jubilant climax, highlighted by soaring violin lines that intertwine seamlessly with the vocals. Isak’s Island delivers a timeless folk sound that resonates with contemporary audiences, leaving an indelible impression that will endure for years to come.
The is a stunning representation of Aksel Undset’s artistic vision. The song’s intricate instrumentation, heartfelt lyricism, and Aksel’s evocative vocals create an immersive musical experience. As we eagerly anticipate the release of Fallen Anchors On The Sea Bed, Isak’s Island continues to establish himself as an unmissable act within the folk genre. His ability to blend timeless influences with his own unique touch ensures that his music will resonate with audiences far and wide. “Someone I’d Recognise” is a testament to Isak’s Island’s talent and we can’t wait to see what his new LP has in store.
Commenting on his upcoming album, he shares, “I wanted to make a simple singer-songwriter album where the writing would be the focal point. It was important that the songs could be performed simply with guitar and singing in one take to make the recording process as simple as possible. I also wanted to incorporate more poetic writing into my songwriting and focus more on the text. I’ve been blessed to have the opportunity to work with outstanding musicians on this album. They had breathed life into the songs and transformed them in a way I couldn’t imagine when I wrote them.”
