Synecdoche Montauk, the musical alias of Russian-born, London-based artist Savva Rozanov, has been dazzling audiences for a decade with his boundary-pushing music. Since the debut album Extracurricular Reading, followed by multiple well-received release, Synecdoche Montauk has cemented its position as one of Russia’s most impressive experimental pop exports. Rozanov’s genre, self-described as ‘Pierrot-core,’ remains fresh and relevant, resonating with the present moment.
As the co-founder and head composer of Monoleak, an international production studio, he has the ability to craft the sound of his songs, infusing them with intricate details. The world of Synecdoche Montauk is intricately layered, balancing allusions to Russian life with contemporary influences, incorporating elements of new R&B, traditional folk and baroque pop. Each song paints a panoramic image with emotional depth, finding its own unique ways of communication.
“Brawl,” a track from Synecdoche Montauk’s latest album Acume, serves as a celebration of solitude and a visual representation of an unrealised dream. Accompanied by an official lyric video, the song unfolds as a mesmerising piece of alternative pop. The minimalistic arrangement features glistening synth tones that create a dreamy atmosphere, setting the stage for Rozanov’s vocals to effortlessly float with delicate elegance, carrying haunting melodic leads. The result is a breathtaking slice of ethereal pop music that is simultaneously original and timeless.
The lyric video for “Brawl” adds another layer of emotion to the song. Collaborating with screenwriter Nikita Nikiforov, Synecdoche Montauk presents a visual narrative where the artist celebrates a birthday alone at a table. This choice enhances the melancholic and emotive impact of the track, with the lyrics displayed in Russian alongside English translations. As the song progresses, it undergoes a shift in energy, accompanied by a thumping beat and powerful synths, coinciding with the blowing out of birthday candles and falling confetti. The track then gracefully returns to a stripped-back, vocal-led outro.
Synecdoche Montauk’s “Brawl” showcases the artist’s ability to create a multi-dimensional experience through music and visuals. The song’s atmospheric dreamy pop soundscape and Rozanov’s haunting vocals create an intimate connection with the listener. The lyric video adds a layer of reflection, capturing the essence of solitude and unfulfilled dreams. The seamless transition between minimalism and the energetic instrumental moment creates a captivating dynamic that keeps the listener engaged from start to finish.
In the realm of experimental pop, Synecdoche Montauk remains a standout act, consistently delivering music that challenges conventions and expands artistic boundaries. As the musical project evolves and continues to explore new sonic territories, one can only anticipate the captivating journeys that lie ahead.
Commenting on the single and lyric video, he shares, “The song Brawl holds a special place in my heart on Acume’s latest album. It accurately reflects my current state of mind. It is challenging to visualise and confine it within boundaries, as it is a very evocative and lyrically rich composition. Therefore, a lyric video format seems like the perfect solution for it. In my childhood, I believed in a silly superstition – to make your dream come true, you must blow out all the candles on the cake in one go. In this lyric video, I am celebrating my rebirth and making the most important wish of my life.”
With screenwriter Nikita Nikiforov adding, “We wanted to convey the feeling of being present at a celebration where, despite being behind the wheel, you are still a passenger. No matter how much you wish, unfortunately, the wish won’t come true.”
