Boston-based progressive post-punk outfit Trailer Swift returns with their latest release, the record Variant, via Mint 400 Records. With their debut EP You Are Not What You Do making waves in 2020, Trailer Swift has established themselves as a force to be reckoned with in the music scene of Boston and beyond. The band’s music speaks the language of outbursts and breakdowns, capturing raw and honest emotions with an imapct that resonates deeply. Crafting songs that authentically convey the ups and downs of the human experience is no easy task, but Trailer Swift rises to the challenge. Their slow-burn space rock is born from broken promises and reflection, manifesting in a awe-inspiring display of sound that mirrors the vulnerabilities of the soul.
Variant was recorded in 2022 with Ethan Dussault, known for his work with Caspian, On the Might of Princes and Malleus, at New Alliance in Somerville, Massachusetts. The album was then mastered by Nick Zampiello at New Alliance East in 2023. Drawing inspiration from artists such as Hum, Nothing, Pup and SDRE, Trailer Swift captures a sense of isolation, unfulfillment, and underlying doom without explicitly spelling it out. Their lyrics provide glimpses into a world where dreams may not be what they seemed, yet there’s still room for the power of imagination.
Variant consists of seven stunning rock tracks that showcase Trailer Swift’s musical prowess. Opening with the title track, “Variant,” ethereal synth tones flutter above hushed vocals, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. The album swiftly picks up momentum with “Cross My Heart,” featuring impassioned vocal leads and clean guitar work that seamlessly transitions into a storming indie rock anthem, characterised by crunching guitars, pounding drums and a rebellious attitude.
“Running Behind” unleashes pure punk fury, propelled by gritty guitar riffs and energising vocal leads that deliver hook-filled lines with irresistible force. Slowing the pace down, “Losing Grip” embraces melodic sensibilities with delicate guitar tones, gradually building towards a powerful crescendo that exudes rock swagger. The bass-driven verses of “Racer” heighten the tension, eventually culminating in a defiant chorus punctuated by splashy drums and exhilarating tempo switch-ups, showcasing Trailer Swift’s progressive rock influences.
“Disintegrate” introduces an extended clean guitar intro, leading to a clash of distorted guitars and soaring vocals. The song evolves into a hazy rock anthem, with stretched melodic lines capturing the listener’s attention. The album concludes with “Way Out”, a dark and driving track, featuring fuzzy instrumental tones and biting vocal layers, creating a sensational cacophony of highly original rock music that leaves a lasting impact.
Trailer Swift’s Variant is a captivating journey through the band’s sonic universe. With their unique blend of post punk, indie rock and progressive elements, Trailer Swift proves their ability to craft compelling songs that resonate deeply with listeners. Their music transports audiences to a realm where vulnerability and authenticity reign, and the result is a record that demands attention and admiration. Variant confirms Trailer Swift’s status as an exciting and innovative band with an album that promises to impress rock enthusiasts and leave a lasting impression.
