Miles Away is the moniker of Vancouver-based producer and singer-songwriter Devin Belanger, who brings us his highly anticipated sophomore EP titled The Space Between Two Halves of a Heart. Miles Away’s music is a nostalgic blend of indie and electronic elements, weaving a sonic tapestry that reflects both the joy and sadness of the past. With his unique sound and profound lyricism, Miles Away captures the essence of being trapped in the present, yearning for the future and dwelling in nostalgic memories.
Building on the success of his previous releases, Miles Away has made a name for himself in the electronic music scene. His string of successful remixes, including the remix of Halsey’s “Without Me” with Nurko, clocked over fifty million streams on YouTube alone. Miles Away’s self-titled EP released via the Lowly Palace imprint further confirmed his place in the industry and his hit single “Bring Me Back,” featuring Canadian vocalist Claire Ridgely continues to win over listeners worldwide.
The Space Between Two Halves of a Heart marks Miles Away’s second EP and serves as his final EDM record. This concept record explores the process of letting go and moving on from a love or attachment that once consumed us. Each track on the EP takes listeners on an emotional journey, from the euphoria of falling in love to the inevitable end and the acceptance of saying goodbye. Collaborations with notable artists such as RUNN and Danni Carra enhance the sonic landscape, adding their unique sonic flair to the release.
Opening with “Happy Tears,” Miles Away links up with both RUNN and AYMEN to create a vibrant electronic pop sound. The track captivates with its infectious energy, driven by a dynamic beat, warm piano chords and intricate electric guitar flourishes. The elegant vocals soar above the arrangement, charming listeners with their ethereal beauty. “Next to You” slows the tempo, showcasing Miles Away’s ability to create delicate soundscapes. With soft guitar sounds, a clacking beat and deep bass tones, Miles Away engages in a beautiful duet with Mercedes Arn-Horn, resulting in a mesmerising and intimate track. “Back to Sleep” features the graceful voice of Danni Carra, floating effortlessly over a rich sonic tapestry of soft synth textures and a laid-back beat, allowing her dazzling vocals to shine.
Standout tracks like “Goodbye” demonstrate Miles Away’s prowess as a vocalist, as his voice soars over a dynamic synth landscape, blending powerful pad tones with crunching processed synth glitches. The EP concludes with “Two Halves of a Heart,” an enthralling composition that showcases infectious melodies, clicking drum samples and emotive songwriting. Miles Away leaves listeners wanting more as he concludes this sensational EP with a stunning display of his talent and creativity.
The Space Between Two Halves of a Heart cements Miles Away’s status as a formidable artist in the electronic music realm. With his moving lyrics, slick production and collaborations with talented vocalists, Miles Away creates an immersive experience that resonates deeply with listeners. This EP album is a magnificent showcase of his growth as an artist and his ability to charm audiences with his unique blend of pop-focused songwriting and electronic influences.
Commenting on the release, he shares, “I think the EP’s story will resonate with a lot of people. Every single person has had at least one moment in their lives where something in you changes, and you realise that you no longer are in love anymore with something or someone that was once all you ever cared about. Whether that’s a career, a partner, a best friend, or even the place you live, we all know this feeling.”
Adding, “This EP is about learning to look inward and realise that it’s ok that people change. But it’s also about studying that process and why it is sometimes so hard to accept that we need to move on. For me, this is something I have struggled with for the last several years: I was no longer happy where I was in my life and I knew that it wasn’t where I was supposed to be, but I couldn’t bring myself to move on. I would constantly look outward for things to blame for my unhappiness, yet nothing changed. It took me years, but I was finally able to look inward and accept that it was OK that I wasn’t happy anymore, and that it was time to move on. That’s why this EP is the last ever Miles Away EDM release. It’s my goodbye to all of you who’ve listened; I thank you so much from the bottom of my heart for all of the years of Miles Away releases. I truly hope you enjoy this EP, as I think it’s the best work I’ve ever done.”
