French DJ and producer Matt Fax has firmly established himself as a prominent figure in the melodic house and progressive music scene over the last few years. With an extensive catalogue of releases on prestigious labels and impressive career achievements since the age of 15, he’s garnered a loyal global fanbase and half a million monthly listeners on Spotify alone. Now, Matt Fax is set to unveil his latest masterpiece, the 15-track album Story Of The Fall, which is poised to elevate his status even further.
Story Of The Fall showcases Matt Fax’s artistic evolution over the past 11 years, highlighting his journey towards becoming a global heavyweight in the electronic music industry. The album seamlessly navigates through a myriad of electronic sub-genres, blending the driving energy of progressive house, the emotive melodies of trance and the raw depth and punch of bass music.

The album opens with “Beyond Belief,” a track that immediately captivates with its bright fluttering synths, pulsating beats and atmospheric textures. As the album unfolds, Matt artfully guides listeners through a sonic journey filled with intricate melodies and ethereal atmospheres. Tracks like “Shield” and “Twilight” showcase his ability to craft emotive and uplifting compositions, while “Somber” dives into chunky, static-drenched bass, contrasted by a glorious, piano-led break that lets the light shine momentarily through.
Throughout the record, Matt Fax’s production prowess shines brightly, with each track carefully crafted to deliver a unique and hypnotising sound. “Fire,” featuring the enchanting vocals of Ladina Viva, weaves a mesmerising soundscape, while the closing track, “This Time,” featuring the slick vocals of Dan Soleil, concludes the album on a high note with pounding percussion and intricate synth arrangements.
Story of the Fall is not just another album; it’s Matt Fax’s magnum opus and most personal project to date. Reflecting on the past three years of his life, the album represents a profound exploration of his identity as both an artist and an individual. Each track carries a piece of his journey, making the album an intimate and introspective experience for both the artist and the listener.
As a producer who’s been releasing music for almost half his life, Matt Fax’s growth and artistic development are palpable on his new LP. This release is a dazzling showcase of his dedication and passion for pushing the boundaries of progressive dance music. With its diverse range of sounds and superb compositions, Story Of The Fall confirms Matt Fax’s position as one of the leading pioneers of the progressive and trance genres.
From start to finish, the album takes listeners on an enveloping journey, wrapping them in a world of powerful melodies, driving beats, deep bass and immersive atmospheres. We caught up with Matt Fax to find out more about his inspirations, his new album Story of the Fall and what he’s got lined up for the future. Check out our interview with Matt Fax below.
Hey Matt, how’s things?
Hey, thanks for having me. Things are good at the moment, very busy with music and touring.
Which artist first made a lasting impression on you?
I think it was Tiesto if we’re talking electronic music. He was the one that made me want to become a DJ and later a producer.
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
I remember downloading Fruity Loops in 2008, then moving to Ableton and Logic in 2009. I had no idea what I was doing or how it worked, but it was my little video game.
Which artists do you draw the most inspiration from today?
I inspire myself from a lot of different artists from various styles. First to come in mind are Noisia, IMANU, deadmau5, Eric Prydz, Radiohead, Boards of Canada.
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
I think my inspiration also comes from my life experiences. It also depends what mood I’m in, there are a lot of factors actually.
What do you love about your local music scene?
To be honest France electronic scene is pretty much dead, especially in Progressive. France is definitely not an electronic music country, but I hope it will change in the future.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
I think nowadays you can enjoy my music in clubs or at festivals. I write a lot of club friendly music to play out, but I think you can also find a handful of tracks to listen on your own at home to reflect to.
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
As I’m a music lover, I always love to discover new artists and styles to inspire myself. I think it also has something to do with my life experiences once again. Since these past 3 years have been very tough, I’ve been listening to darker music, and made darker music myself.
Has your production process changed over the years too?
The more I produce, the better I want to be, so I try to learn new techniques and ways to improve my work flow. I tend to think like a mix engineer early in the process nowadays.
How did you find making your new album ‘Story Of The Fall’?
I’ve made this album as a therapy for myself to cop with all the things I had to go through these past 3 years.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
It’s built like a story. It’s a story about how life can change you for the worst, and how you can become a person you don’t really want to be. There is a lot of anger, darkness and sadness in this record. I just wanted people to feel like I felt when doing these tracks.
This record covers a range of different electronic styles, do you have a favourite you like to make the most?
I love making music in general, but I loved working on Dubstep songs. It was a way to challenge myself to make my own sound design, and learn new production techniques that I’ll use in other tracks now.
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
I’ve been listening to a lot of Bass Music like Noisia, IMANU, Caracal Project, Buunshin, the Disciple label family, but also some Hip Hop, Metal and some Techno.
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
I think I want them to know myself better and also to help people who would be in the same situation as me. If they can relate to my songs and it helps them getting out of a bad situation, it’s a great thing.
What’s been your favourite live performance so far?
My show at Âme Club last year was and is still the best performance of mine. The place, the crowd, everything was perfect. Can’t wait to come back.
Who would be 3 artists to headline your dream festival? And where would it be?
I think I’d have Radiohead opening, followed by Eric Prydz and get Noisia back from their retreat to end up with. All of that in the middle of nowhere. This is a total nonsense festival, but I’d do it for me.
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Just be true to yourself, do the music you want to do, have fun and the rest will follow.
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2023?
I’m going to tour the world for the album mostly. Keep an eye on my socials to be up to date with my gigs!
