Alex Izraev is a gifted cinematographer hailing from Tel Aviv, Israel, who possesses a profound love for music. Steeped in the influences of prog rock and folk, Alex weaves intricate musical tales from his home studio, infused with the sounds of the 70s to craft his compositions. His musical journey began to take shape in 2021 with the release of his debut single, “Wandering,” and he’s since dropped three additional tracks. Now, Alex unveils his latest creation, an EP titled Laboratory, a 5-track wonder that bridges the worlds of music and art.
This EP is a collaborative masterpiece, an artistic venture that unites music and visual art in a mesmerising symphony. The concept of Laboratory was inspired by a painting by the artist Yossi Veissid. Each song on the EP serves as a sonic interpretation of different aspects of this captivating artwork.
The EP opens with the “Overture,” an opening track that sets the stage for the auditory expedition ahead. It begins with a sampled phone call, quickly transitioning into a news report detailing an unexpected catastrophe. This ominous introduction is mirrored by the brooding arrangement of haunting tones and ethereal flute melodies, creating a sense of foreboding. Soon, the song evolves into a theatrical showcase of prog rock influences. The relentless drum patterns are punctuated by slick lead guitar lines, guiding the listener through a stirring and immersive soundscape.
Following the haunting “Overture,” the EP is divided into four distinct acts, each offering a unique listening experience that reflects a different facet of the associated painting. “Act I: The Descent” opens with serene neo-classical elegance. Delicate piano-led instrumentation, soft bass undertones, and intricate electric guitar leads intertwine gracefully. As the drums join the ensemble, a piano and string arrangement emerges, brimming with subtle energy and intricate melodic motifs.
“Act II: Feral Assistance” takes a fascinating turn, introducing an Eastern twist with its elegant flute motifs. These haunting melodies are juxtaposed against sparse chimes, gradually giving way to a laid-back, experimental jazz-inspired groove. Smooth lead guitar lines soar above, adding an infectious top layer to the composition, while the arrangement shifts gracefully, incorporating beautiful orchestral elements like piano and strings.
“Act III: Reconstruction” delivers a hypnotic soundscape. Warm organ tones, a pulsing bass guitar and gently cascading drums grow in intensity, crafting a kaleidoscopic composition filled with vivid colours and sonic vibrancy. The EP comes full circle with “Act IV: The Ascent,” a cinematic masterpiece. This final act brilliantly combines classical music and prog rock influences to create a rousing and unforgettable finale to this instrumental journey.
What makes this EP so remarkable is not just the music itself but the marriage between music and visual art. It’s an EP that invites listeners to experience art in a multi-sensory way. The music, which was initially showcased in a public exhibition alongside the associated artwork, beautifully underscores the synergy between different forms of artistic expression. With Laboratory, Alex Izraev has crafted an engaging sonic odyssey via his intricate compositions and keen sense of storytelling, offering a truly immersive and memorable experience.
