Palm Trees In Moscow is the Baltimore-based music outfit helmed by the talented singer-songwriter Chris Frantz. The project has evolved over the years, from high-octant garage rock to dark pop and shoegaze-infused soundscapes. With each step in their evolution and each step of sonic exploration, they’ve continued to leave a distinct mark on the alternative music scene.
The story of Palm Trees In Moscow begins with Chris Frantz’s desire to create his own music. After years of playing and experimenting with various bands, he decided to embark on a solo journey. In September 2018, Palm Trees In Moscow expanded its horizons by collaborating with producer Ben Schigel at Spider Studios in Cleveland, Ohio.
Now they share their latest release with the new 4-track EP titled Heights, opening with its eponymous track, setting the tone for the musical journey that lies ahead. “Heights” is a bold alternative rock offering, driven by the gritty twang of electric guitars that dance over a gentle drum beat. Chris Frantz’s vocals glide above, a smoky blend of richness and melody, delivering lyrics that dive into the quest for meaning within a relationship. The song surprises with a rhythmic shift, incorporating subtle metal influences and an atmospheric instrumental interlude, creating a captivating sonic adventure.
“Iridescent” follows, revealing a softer side of the band. Delicate guitar work welcomes listeners, accompanied by subtly grooving drums and pulsating bass lines. Frantz’s vocals are restrained and breathy, leading to a chorus marked by expansive melodies. The song adds an unexpected twist with a tempo change in the outro, delivering an anthemic indie rock conclusion.
“Grow(n)” emerges as a grunge-infused outing, featuring slick lead guitar licks and dynamic rhythms. Frantz’s commanding voice takes charge, culminating in a haze of timeless rock music. Finally, “Foolproof” brings the EP to a close, enveloping listeners in dreamy soundscapes. Ethereal guitar layers intertwine with delicate vocals, building to climactic choruses bursting with distorted energy.
With Heights, Palm Trees In Moscow showcases their evolution from primal garage rockers to purveyors of diverse sound and profound songwriting. This EP serves as a thrilling showcase of their growth as artists and confirms them as an act worth watching as they continue to reach new heights in their musical endeavours.
