In 2018 Rossa Murray & the blowin’ winds dropped their debut single, “Blackout on EZ st.,” offering the first taste of their highly original sound, cocooned in hazy retro aesthetics. The band’s follow-up, the breakout single “Sophie,” won over audiences worldwide, amassing over a million and a half streams alone. Last year, they released their debut EP, Who Really Wants to Get Clean, Part 1, and now, they return with its companion, the brand new EP titled Who Really Wants to Get Clean – Part 2.
The thematic core of this project revolves around a relatable experience – loving something or someone despite its detrimental impact on our lives. It’s about the inability to sever those bonds, even when we’re aware of the entrapment. While Part 1 offered a slightly darker, alternative folk character, in contrast, Part 2 adopts a more electric, raucous and laid back approach to exploring these profound themes.
Featuring six tracks, this EP embarks on a journey with the hauntingly beautiful “Buenas,” where hushed acoustic guitar strums descend gracefully into an immersive soundscape. The instrumental intro, through beautifully wailing electric guitar twangs, sets the stage for an unforgettable musical experience.
The EP progresses like a story, with each track bearing its own unique chapter. “It’s Only Rain” opens with a bouncy rhythm, adorned with pulsing bass guitar, lightly grooving drums and intricate lead guitar flourishes. The lead vocals, with laid-back delivery, hover above, creating an intimate indie rock piece that gradually swells into a subtly rousing chorus.
“Amsterdam” takes on a mellower tone, with its gentle country undertones and restrained vocals that float above like a whisper. Meanwhile, “Bffs” showcases the band’s exceptional songwriting prowess. Here, they combine an acoustic rock backdrop with a snapping beat and catchy vocal work, blurring the lines between warm, intimate vibes and lofty, memorable moments.
“San Francisco Has Her Now” transports us to a brighter and breezier soundscape. Accented guitar chord strums, softly shuffling drums and storytelling lyrics come together to craft an enchanting and transportive indie sound. The EP closes with the title track, “Who Really Wants To Get Clean,” where somber piano tones open the curtain on a delicate ballad. Aching vocals, accompanied by distant backing voices, guide us through an arrangement that slowly builds with acoustic guitar and sparse percussion, bringing the two part series to a delicate conclusion with an elegant finale.
