While most of the world is stitched together by increasing connectivity, Packetloss is a band that goes against the grain. With members spread between Ireland and Scotland, their formation and creative process have been uniquely shaped by the digital age. Indeed, the band’s very name, ‘Packetloss,’ is a nod to the challenges of performing together online, where lag and white noise disrupt the flow of sound.
The band’s story began when lead guitarist and vocalist Jamie connected with Geetar Jack on Jamulus, an online platform that facilitates remote musical collaboration. Together, they embarked on a journey of musical exploration, initially focusing on covers of existing songs. The lineup expanded with the addition of Steve, who would join on drums.
As of now, Packetloss has 13 songs in the recording pipeline and last month the band decided to offer listeners a glimpse into their sonic world with the release of the instrumental track “Unrelaxed.” Now they bring us the full scope of their sonic vision with their debut 4 track EP titled Disconnected (Vol#1).
Opened by the filtered in instruments on title track “Disconnected,” the song charges with an upbeat sound of punk pop with a crunchy guitar riff and driving drums. Jamie’s commanding vocals enter with the charm and intensity of bands like The Offspring as the song takes on a catchy and energising sound full of catchy melodic lines and slick guitar leads.
“Break The Chains” erupts with a moody and fast paced flurry of metal-inspired guitar riffs and splashy drums before dying down to a chugging backing for Jamie’s emphatic vocal leads. Maintaining a high-octane energy throughout, the song is a storming modern rock anthem.
Next up, the full version of “Unrelaxed” offers a more subdued sound with lightly crunchy guitar chords giving way to an acoustic backing and soft vocals over the gentle patter of drums. Rising to a euphoric chorus of soaring melodies and rock backing, it’s a stunning example of the band’s songwriting.
The EP closes with “Shards,” a downtempo and emotive song that bends from a soft acoustic rock sound to a rousing blend of distorted guitars, soaring solos and powerful vocals to offer a sensational finale to the band’s excellent debut EP.
