Arriving on the music scene just last year, Stuttgart-based synth-pop duo Sugartin has swiftly made a name for themselves with a series of impressive EPs. Their music has struck a chord both in their homeland and across the UK, securing radio play and amassing a growing fan base. Sugartin’s live performances have also been met with praise, from local shows in Stuttgart to a notable gig in Paris at the close of last year.
Iris, one half of Sugartin, pens her lyrics in German, English and French, reflecting their multilingual and multicultural influences. This linguistic diversity is showcased once again in their fifth EP, Spaß Allein. Released under the Exlove Records label, Spaß Allein features three tracks, all produced in the Sugartin Studio by members Iris and Daniel, perfectly capturing their distinctive synth pop sound.
The opening song and title track, “Spaß Allein,” sets the stage with a playful, energetic rhythm that lives up to its name, translating to ‘having fun alone’ in English. As the drums shuffle and bass synth shots pulse, Iris delivers rhythmic vocals that dance above the beat, creating an infectious and lively atmosphere.
Shifting gears, “Summer Rain” offers a change of pace and language with its spacey and atmospheric sound and English lyrics. Haunting vocal lines stretch out over shining synth textures, casting an ethereal and immersive aura. Piquant guitar plucks and lofty percussive tones flutter throughout the track, reaching an enveloping soundscape that completely wraps around you.
The EP closes with “Fragile,” where Iris gracefully delivers lyrics in French. The song unfolds on a downtempo synth pop canvas, led by a gently driving beat and subtle, rattling synth notes. Iris’s airy vocal leads hover amidst a hazy sonic fabric, creating an intimate and stripped-back atmosphere.
Each track on the EP offers a distinct experience, from the carefree joy of “Spaß Allein” to the immersive beauty of “Summer Rain” and the intimate vulnerability of “Fragile.” Sugartin’s music manages to reach across linguistic boundaries while remaining enjoyable for any listener, and with Spaß Allein, they continue to make a mark in the European synth pop scene.
