Australian artist yergurl is a true triple threat; as a singer, songwriter and producer, the 21 year old takes full control of her creative vision. Crafting a highly original alternative pop sound via an experimental approach from her bedroom, she takes inspiration from a wide range of styles from 80s music, horrorcore, alternative rock and from artists such as The 1975, Charli XCX and Lana Del Rey.
Making her artistic entrance in 2018, she earned recognition as a finalist in Triple J’s Unearthed High Competition, confirming her status as a must watch newcomer in the Australian music scene. Unveiling her sound to the world the following year, she dropped the debut single “Girls Like Me,” followed up by her first EP titled Love Bite later in 2019.
Since last year she enjoyed a prolific creative spree, releasing a string of well-received singles, all leading up to her debut full-length release, set to drop in February next year. Now, following the tracks “a lil bit,” “hard” and “exactly the same,” she brings us her fourth single of the year with the brand new track titled “ripe n sweet.”
Opened by the spacey sound of fluttering synths, filtering in to build the tension, the drums enter to usher in yergurl’s bright vocal leads. Pounding beats drive the buzzy synth arrangement as she threads alluring melodies above, resulting in a slick blend of synth pop, alternative R&B and hyperpop.
Written in the spur of the moment while the artist was traveling in Thailand when she realised her upcoming mixtape was missing a distinctly hook-focused anthem, “ripe n sweet” serves up an energising and instantly catchy sound. With playful and flirty lyricism, the song is penned as a sales pitch of what the artist can offer as a romantic partner; though as a ‘ripe and sweet’ fruit, there’s a sense of urgency to act fast before the fruit spoils.
The single is set to be the penultimate song on the forthcoming record’s track list, serving as one final appeal to a would-be lover before the more melancholic context of the release’s last track. Having enjoyed another stellar year, yergurl is set to continue winning over fans around the world with her highly anticipated mixtape and if “ripe n sweet” is anything to go by, it’s set to be an unmissable drop from this exciting artist.
