Hailing from the city of Hong Kong, Amelie Jat is a versatile artist who pours her emotions into genre-blurring pop tracks. An accomplished multi-instrumentalist, she discovered her love for percussion when she was just three years olf, eventually moving on to playing orchestral instruments like the four-mallet vibraphone.
Her journey began in 2019 with the debut single “Stars in the Sunlight,” and since then, she’s released a string of well-received singles, EPs and full-length records. Starting out with the intimacy of bedroom pop production, Amelie has undergone a musical metamorphosis, venturing into the energetic sounds of pop punk.
In 2022, Amelie boldly embraced a new direction, linking up with Grammy-nominated producer James McMillan to release three pop-punk singles, “I’M OUT,” “Therapy” and “Electric Butterflies.” Now, Amelie brings us her latest release, the new album titled for the plot, a 13-track journey into an uptempo pop-focused rock sound. This electrifying pop-punk album captures the recklessness, nostalgia, dramatic intensity and freedom inherent in the coming-of-age experience.
Opened by “I’M OUT!,” a song that first saw the artist venture into pop punk territory, Amelie recorded updated vocal tracks for the album version. Ushered in by the soft plucks of guitar, Amelie’s gentle vocals glide in to thread alluring melodies and poignant lyricism before the song erupts with gritty distorted guitars, driving drums and commanding vocals carrying instantly catchy melodic leads.
One of the artist’s personal favourites, “Electric Butterflies” recounts a tale of friends becoming lovers and the butterflies in the stomach feelings associated with new found infatuation. Lightly crunching guitar tones underpin her lofty vocals as the punch of drums carries a laid back energy, rising into an upbeat pop rock anthem full of memorable hooks and heartfelt lyrics.
“nostalgia” showcases the tender side of Amelie’s songwriting panache with its delicate acoustic guitar backing and emotive vocal performance. Written about longing for sweet moments of the past, she filters her vulnerabilities through a sepia-toned indie pop lens, resulting in a dazzling sound brimming with blissful melodies and backed by a warm arrangement of piano, strings, guitars and lively drums.
Other highlights on the record include songs like “i’m so in love (i think i’m gonna be sick),” another exploration of the ups and downs of falling for someone. With its energising pop punk sound of infectious vocal lines and lush backing voices, Amelie crafts a rousing and relatable outing.
“2028” sets up a superb contrast of dreamy aesthetic and punchy rhythm to create an engaging alternative pop sound. Singing about letting go and allowing destiny to take its course when meeting the right person at the wrong time, elegant vocal leads flutter above a stunning blend of shimmering synths and piano as the impact of the drums injects energy throughout.
The record closes with “R.I.P.” to deliver one final dose of Amelie Jat’s storming pop punk sound with an angsty anthem about moving on from someone. Across the album, the artist serves up a cohesive listening experience packed full of unforgettable songwriting, slick musicianship and compelling vocals all wrapped up in exquisite production. It’s another stellar release from an artist who continues to go from strength to strength with each move.
Producer James McMillan, a key collaborator since Amelie was 14, played an instrumental role in bringing this project to life. Their enduring partnership spanning over six years is a showcase of the strength and productivity of their creative alliance. With each release, Amelie continues to evolve and win over fans around the world, confirming her status as a must-watch artist with much to offer.
