In the Lower East Side of Manhattan, Swedish alternative pop duo Laundry Boys found their creative haven in the summer of 2020 and started their exciting sonic endeavour. After forming their artistic banner on the first night, the second saw them craft their musical philosophy; one that sees them create music that reflects the hypnotic experience of watching clothes spin round in a washing machine, warmth and nostalgia wrap around you as you’re mesmerised by the mixing colours and foaming water. That’s the essence of Laundry Boys’ music, a tranquil retreat into a world of stoner pop.
Commenting on their inception, they share, “When you start a completely new project, everything is possible, in both a good and a bad way. It has taken us time to find a vibe we like and how we like to make music. We’ve scrapped a lot of good songs along the way because they’re not the right kind of good songs. Now five lovely little creations go well with dice games, red wine hangouts, and other relaxed get-togethers.”
They’ve quickly became synonymous with laid-back vibes, since first showcasing their sound this summer with their debut single “Drunk On Love,” winning over fans and catching the attention of tastemakers around the world. Now, following their sophomore single “Praise You” in August, they bring us their debut EP titled Yatzy Music Vol. 1 featuring the previously released singles “Drunk On Love” and “Praise You”, as well as three new tracks.
The first half of a two part series of EPs on the same theme, volume one sees Laundry Boys extend their sonic vision and go from strength to strength with a superb new release. Opened by “Drunk On Love,” the EP kicks off with the ethereal drone of a synth as the patter of percussive elements add a gentle rhythm before the vocals enter, subtly pitched and processed. Threading heartfelt lyricism to paint a transportive scene via stunning melodies, jangly guitar tones flutter below to add a subtle psychedelic twist to the soundscape.
Lead single on the EP “American Confidence” takes inspiration from the band’s time in New York in 2020. Ushered in by the gentle tap of drums, mellow vocals glide in with a hushed delivery over the grooving bass guitar lines. It’s a breezy indie pop jam capped by blissful melodies and smooth instrumentation. On the inspiration behind this single, they offer, “Americans sometimes have a self-confidence that you can be both irritated and jealous of. There can be quite a bit of this ‘here I am!’ mentality, which is a bit shocking to us Swedes who are more ‘excuse me, here I am.”
The soft synth tones of the intro to “Praise You” follows before a dreamy groove pops with the laid back snap of a beat, pulsing bass guitar lines, airy guitar notes and soulful pitched down vocals all floating in a spacey sonic atmosphere dripping in reverb. Spinning a downtempo disco-inflected indie pop sound, “Praise You” delivers a shimmering sound packed full of rhythm and catchy writing.
“Yesterday’s Weather” crafts an intriguing atmosphere as quiet bells chime above the heartbeat plucks of bass guitar, joined by the delicate twang of clean electric guitar tones. Airy vocals hover above, floating in an immersive sea of warm sonic texture, resulting in an enchanting sound that completely wraps you in the band’s soothing alternative dream pop aesthetic.
The EP closes with “Giving Up On Love,” where a subdued electronic beat sets the foundation for sparse guitar notes to slide, drenched in stretching reverb to create a stripped back arrangement for the vocals to cut through and serve up picture painting lyrics. With the chorus, vibrant chords shine as the vocals dance above, forming a graceful sonic experience that delivers a stellar finale to the band’s sensational debut EP.
