The Ram is an accomplished musician with a life story as diverse as his influences who takes us on a epic sonic journey with his latest EP, Ram’s Dead, Vol. 1. Born in Pittsburgh and raised on a farm near Philadelphia, The Ram’s experiences stretch from the streets of New York City to the laid-back West Coast. This musical nomad infuses the essence of his varied and itinerant life into his creative output.
Diving into his perpetual motion-filled life and wanderlust-driven experiences, The Ram is a true storyteller. A pulsating heartbeat, an infectious groove and a captivating voice define The Ram’s unique musical identity.
Having shared various releases over the last three years, 2023 has seen him drop two singles and a full-length record with “Songs of Wanderlust.” Now he closes out another stellar year with his latest release, the new EP titled “Ram’s Dead, Vol. 1.” As nodded to in its title, the new EP is a four-track collection of Grateful Dead covers, born from The Ram experimenting in the studio in the spring.
Opened by “Me and My Uncle,” the EP opens with delicate guitar flutters, shimmering over the soft patter of drums as The Ram’s smokey voice croons above. With subtle psychedelic aesthetic, on the first song he crafts a timeless sound via a superb rendition of a classic song.
“Scarlet Begonias” sets up a smooth groove with gentle tapping drums and the elegant twang of country-inflected slide guitar as he threads his warm and rich vocals above. Capturing the enduring charm of the original, The Ram puts his own spin on this track to craft an upbeat and inviting sound.
With “Fire On the Mountain” he serves up an epic cover with an extended intro jam before his vocal leads take the reins to guide us through a delightful re-imagination of the song. The EP closes with “Scarlet Fire,” an expansive slice of the Grateful Dead’s music filtered through his own unique sonic lens across an incredible twelve minute adventure.
With his first outing of cover, The Ram reveals his knack for interpreting the music that’s influenced him so profoundly and presenting song’s written by others in his own unique way. With the follow up “Vol. 2” set to drop next year, we can’t wait to see where his latest endeavour will take him.
