Coming out of Tokyo’s music scene, artist and producer RIII is a dance music visionary and distinguished member of the ARANCK Collective. Inspired by the rich traditions of bass music, RIII’s sonic output traverses across genres, encompassing the rhythmic spheres of breakbeats, breaks, dubstep, techno, trance and beyond.
Fascinated by the intricate beats and percussive structures of dance music, RIII crafts a sound that places a profound emphasis on a simple yet powerful bassline, while his musical exploration extends to the experimental sounds, synth tones and grooves found in genres like techno and psychedelic trance. A true purveyor of all things dance music, RIII uses his production panache to bring to life his sonic vision in a range of different styles and genres.
First making his entrance in 2019 with his debut single “PANORAMA,” he’s since shared a string of well-received releases in the build up to his first full-length release, Gravity Wave which dropped at the end of last year. Now he returns with his latest release, bringing us his brand new 3-track EP, aptly titled Vibesy.
The EP is a sensational showcase of RIII’s ability to distil a diverse array of influences into a cohesive sonic expression. Consistently set at 140 BPM, Vibesy dives into the essence of music’s power to invoke movement across various genres, revealing RIII’s versatility and innovative spirit.
Opened by the title track “Vibesy,” the intricate patter of percussive elements sets up a lively energy, underpinned by the wubbing pulses of synth tones. Peppered with piquant sonic touches and vocal samples, the drop hits to deliver an infectious groove of deep bass tones, precise beats and enveloping electronic instrumentation, crafting a slick dance-focused sound that’s guaranteed to get people moving.
Next up, “Organic” keeps the momentum high with a playful intro of buzzy drum shots, rattling sonic textures and rhythmic vocal samples. Serving up a trance-inducing vibe, the track then takes off with the deep pound of bass shots and intense flutters of synths that float across the sonic spectrum as breaks drum rolls cut through the mix. It’s a stunning display of RIII’s exquisite sound design and his knack for crafting an energising dance sound that’s entirely original.
The EP closes with “Kick,” a track that lays down a moody atmosphere of ominous bass swells and tinny percussion to build up a sense of brooding anticipation before the track erupts into a spacey sound of lofty synth tones and deep wubs, driven by shuffling drums. Layers of synth tones collide above the lively rhythm to crate an enveloping sound that’s as mesmerising as it is energising.
