Based in New York, Rebel Kicks is an exciting duo spearheaded by brothers Anthony and Steven Babino. Heirs to a musical legacy, having shared harmonies with their jazz musician father, the duo’s evolution from their humble beginnings has culminated in the vibrant rock-infused, indie pop band known as Rebel Kicks.
Their debut single, “Fall of the American Dream,” released in 2018, marked the beginning of Rebel Kicks’ musical adventure. The subsequent years saw the band flourish, releasing a full-length album titled A Portrait of Man: Part 1 in 2020, a live EP and a string of singles that found a home on major platforms like MTV and Showtime.
The duo’s live performances, bolstered by the addition of Daniel Bradley on drums and Dorian Lake on keys and vocals, have dazzled audiences, reaching a pinnacle with their show at The Cutting Room in New York City. A significant chapter in their journey unfolded with the release of the irresistibly energetic single, “Silhouette,” setting the stage for a series of new tracks this year.
Now they bring us their latest release with their brand new five-track EP titled somewhere.in.between. Opened by “The Girl In Barcelona,” bright guitar flutters are joined by lively drums that settle the song into a laid back groove full of pulsing bass lines. As the arrangement strips back, their lead vocals enter to thread smooth melodies before launching into an instantly catchy chorus brimming with shimmering instrumentation and infectious vocal leads. It’s a superb taste of their pop-focused indie rock sound, inspired by a trip to Spain.
The other lead single, “Past Life” starts with playful airy instrumental tones before floating vocal lines usher in a mellow energy of gently snapping drums and lightly gritty guitar lines, serving up a spacey indie rock sound. With more of their hook-focused songwriting, soft guitar-led sound and smooth rhythm, “Past Life” offers up another stellar dose of the alluring Rebel Kicks sound.
Next up, “Flowering Dogwood” sets up an intimate tone with the patter of dry percussion and intricate instrumental touches that dance above while elegant vocals weave heartwarming melodies and picture painting lyricism. Building with a subtle rock twist from the crunch of electric guitar, while maintaining its delicate feel throughout, it’s a song that distils the band’s distinct sound in a graceful setting.
“Feel Good” immediately pops with a downtempo groove as the pump of bass guitar ride the punch of drums and warm brass tones drape over the arrangement. Hushed vocals hover above soothing electric piano chords to craft a feel-good jam built on intricate layers of vocals and stripped back instrumental backing.
The EP closes with “Save It For A Rainy Day” delivering one final dose of uplifting musical magic from Rebel Kicks. Shining with vibrant vocal harmonies, shuffling drums and silky instrumentation, it’s an infectious sound that’s guaranteed to put a smile on your face and leave you with sweet melodies of this talented duo’s superb new EP release.
