Coming out of Miami, Florida, Swivvel is an indie rock quintet that’s struck a chord with fans around the world with their unique sonic output. Known for blending melancholic pop melodies with impressive technical musicianship, Swivvel offers something entirely new in the indie rock landscape.
In April 2021 they unveiled their sound with the debut single “Parlor Trick,” which they followed up with three further singles. Now they bring us their latest release with their debut EP titled Passerby, serving up three new tracks that captures the latest snapshot of their thrilling sonic adventure.
Across the EP, Swivvel presents a musical journey that pays homage to Miami’s sun-soaked setting and summer-time sadness. Each track captures a unique moment, an emotion and a story, creating an EP that distils the fleeting nature of people who pass through our lives, leaving enduring imprints.
Opened by the title track “Passerby,” the EP kicks off with bright guitar chords to set up a lively energy and funky rhythm before the full band sound joins with bouncy bass lines, shuffling drums and dynamic vocal leads fluttering between airy falsetto lines and intense vocal shouts. Shifting mood and vibe with ease, on “Passerby,” Swivvel deliver a superb slice of their highly original alternative indie rock sound.
“Swim” pops with drums strikes as the arrangement settles into a laid back groove capped by intricate guitar touches and lightly punching rhythm. As the vocals come in, they craft a dreamy indie rock sound full of delicate melodies and storytelling lyricism on this catchy jam that builds up to a breakdown where the band lays down an enveloping finale.
The EP closes with “Newfound” with its playful rhythm and elegant lead vocals that gently dance above a blend of clean guitar licks and shimmering chords, driven by the subtly driving energy of the drums. Buoyant vocal lines stretch out in the chorus, resulting in a memorable sound of infectious indie music to provide a stellar conclusion to this talented band’s sensational debut EP. As Swivvel continues to go from strength to strength, Passerby marks a significant chapter for this exciting outfit and we can’t wait to see what else they’ve got in store.
