Foxxglove is a singer-songwriter hailing from Ferndale in South Wales whose musical journey stitches dark atmospheric pop with poignant storytelling. Drawing inspiration from artists like Avril Lavigne, Miley Cyrus, Fleetwood Mac, David Bowie, Kate Bush, Halsey and Paramore, Foxxglove infuses her work with a range of influences, all filtered through her own unique creative lens.
Her musical roots, influenced by a mix of genres ranging from her mother’s love for musical theatre to her father’s collection of classics, defines Foxxglove’s unique sound. Establishing herself as a fully-fledged artist under the Foxxglove moniker, she stepped into the spotlight with her debut single “City” in March 2020. Collaborating with artist and producer Minas, she’s crafted her own style, marked by dark atmospheric pop and poignant lyricism exploring themes of toxic relationships, mental health and self-preservation.
Over the past three years, Foxxglove has unveiled a string of well-received singles, showcasing her talent as an artist and her ability to connect with audiences on an emotional level. Her live performances at events like Swn Festival, Focus Wales showcase, In It Together Festival and Rebel Fest, as well as supporting Holding Absence, have seen her win over fans from the stage.
Now she brings us her most ambitious studio release to date with her debut EP titled The Chaos, a six-track release that captures Foxxglove’s musical evolution over the years. Working alongside songwriters Jed Robertson, Violet Skies and producer James Minas, Foxxglove offers a compelling journey into her personal experiences.
Kicking off with her debut single “City,” the gentle twang of guitar tones weave with Foxxglove’s lead vocal flutters as the laid back snap of percussion raises the tension. Reversed vocal samples usher in Foxxglove’s full sound full of driving bass lines, winding synth textures and shuffling drum groove as her ethereal voice hovers above. With her meaningful lyricism, enveloping arrangement and compelling melodic leads, she crafts a thrilling into to her EP.
“Dear You” follows with delicate instrumental tones, softly shimmering as the artist’s voice glides in to craft an intimate alternative pop scene. The contrast between her airy vocals and the deep rumble of bass textures creates a stunning sonic juxtaposition as sparse synth tones pepper the arrangement, resulting in a stellar sense of flow before the song erupts with powerful electronic pop energy in its finale.
Other highlights on the EP include songs like “Family Ties,” a beautiful showcase of Foxxglove’s tender songwriting and the graceful quality of her vocal performance. Warm piano notes dance with bubbling sonic tones as the filtered patter of drums joins to craft a superb slice of memorable indie pop music that’s at once memorable and moving.
The EP closes with title track “The Chaos,” an energising exploration of Foxxglove’s rock-tinged sound. Pounding drums drive the gentle groove as the subtle crunch of guitar and bass sets up a moody backdrop for Foxxglove’s vocal to soar above, crafting a powerful conclusion to the EP that reveals yet more of her creativity and the diversity of her sonic output.
