The Sleepy Haunts is an alternative indie rock outfit hailing from the grunge capital of Seattle, Washington. Led by the charismatic singer-songwriter Gillian McMahon, accompanied by guitarist Josiah Massari, drummer Sevastian Dingler and bassist Noah Wager, The Sleepy Haunts infuse their music with ‘Bubble Grunge’ influences, drawing inspiration from the likes of Beabadoobee and Beach Bunny.
The band’s unique name, derived from a Spotify name generator, reflects Gillian’s affinity for spooky elements and napping, setting the tone for their playful and imaginative approach to music. Their lineup has evolved organically, with members joining through mutual connections and shared passion for creating captivating sounds.
With influences ranging from Alanis Morissette, Beach Bunny and Paramore to modern sensations like Olivia Rodrigo, The Sleepy Haunts promise a diverse listening experience. Their music serves as a celebration of alternative pop culture while distilling the complexities of adolescence, offering both catchy tunes for light-hearted enjoyment and thoughtful ballads for a deeper emotional connection.
In March 2020 they made their entrance with the debut single “Pissed Off,” which they quickly followed up with their debut record Queendom later that year. This year they returned with new music, dropping two singles, “Peter Parker” and “the end (morning after)” in the build up to their latest release, their first EP titled bloom, Vol. 1. Featuring four tracks, including their two recent singles, the new EP provides the perfect snapshot of an exciting band in their artistic evolution.
Opened by “why do i feel this way?” the EP kicks off with Gillian’s airy vocal leads floating over the crunch of flange-tinged guitar chords and soft synth tones. With the splash of drums, the song launches into an instantly catchy pop rock anthem full of driving energy, infectious vocal leads and relatable lyricism.
“standing, waiting” starts with a delicate blend of soft piano tones and warm acoustic guitar strums as Gillian threads elegant melodies above, resulting in an intimate and heartfelt sound. Adding subtle energy with a shaker and hushed kick drum, the song gently weaves a dreamy indie rock sound that showcases another side to the inviting sonic universe of The Sleepy Haunts.
Lead single “Peter Parker” immediately pops with uptempo rhythm, crunchy guitar backing and memorable vocal leads, all colliding to form a stellar pop punk cut. Rising to an unforgettable chorus brimming with danceable energy and superb vocal writing, it’s a highlight that showcases the band’s enduring songwriting talent and ability to bring to life their musical vision in an engaging way.
Closing the EP with “the end (morning after),” they craft a graceful acoustic sound with a stripped back arrangement that sees Gillian’s voice float above an acoustic guitar, spinning moving lyrics. Raising the sound with the kick of drums and wailing sonic textures, the song builds to an emphatic crescendo to create a lofty and rousing finale to their sensational new EP.
