Making moves in London’s music scene, Yodashe is a truly pioneering artist and producer who started out on her solo electronic journey in New York City as an alumna of the prestigious Redbull Music Academy. Prior to her new project, she fronted the band Flakes, opening for artists like Bloc Party and supporting Primal Scream, The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Foals in a live show in Athens.
As Yodashe, her sonic identity refuses to be boxed into any one genre or style. Casting aside pre-conceived structures and expectations of music, she throws out the rule to construct a wildly original sonic output driven by relentless experimentation and exploration.
Making a name as a genre-breaking artist, varied influences from classical choral music to indie rock and avant-garde electronics funnel into a sound unlike any other. This innovative musical voyage was first revealed back in 2020 with the single “Take Time.” Last year saw her ramp up her creative endeavour, dropping two original tracks with “Salarywomxn” and “Visualization,” both adding further pieces to the audio puzzle of the Yodashe uniqverse.
Now she jump starts 2024 with a brand new release, bringing us her latest titled titled “MRKTPLC,” serving up another dose of her fiercely original and endlessly creative sound. Setting her sights on the theme of artistic creation in a world of algorithmically delivered social media, “MRKTPLC” flows through a range of styles where diverse sonic moods collide into a cohesive sound that surprises and twists at every turn.
Starting with an abrupt beat of rattling snare, the track casts an avant-garde synth pop soundscape wrapped in alternative aesthetic and injected with punk attitude. Lively vocals stab above the pulsing synth backing as pattering percussive shots build up before the song takes a dramatic shift to a downtempo, dark ambient place where moody synth stretches and sparse drum kicks underpin intense pitched vocal bursts.
With dynamic rises and drops throughout, “MRKTPLC” offers a thrilling ride of contrasting energies all filtered through Yodashe’s pioneering creative approach. At times catchy and memorable, others jarring and challenging, yet always enjoyable and thought-provoking, “MRKTPLC” sees this groundbreaking artist continue to draw from the fringes of experimental electronic pop to craft unique and gripping musical experiences.
