In the modern hip hop sphere, Baltimore-based rapper and songwriter Big RASNA has earned a reputation as a must-watch artist with his profound writing and incredible sound. Over the last two years he’s been sharing his original sonic vision across several compelling releases while winning over fans around the world.
March 2022 saw him make his artistic entrance with his debut single “5AM in Aspen,” which he’s since followed up with a string of well-received tracks including a collaborative song with OPR AVON on “Tracy.” Now he brings us his most ambitious release to date with his brand new debut EP titled Summerhouse Vol. 1, a release inspired by the groundbreaking UK TV series Top Boy.
The highly anticipated EP is full of raw storytelling across its six tracks and marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the artist. With parts two and three set to drop later this year, Big RASNA is set to diver deep into a vivid world he’s creating.
Kicked off with title track “Summer House,” vocal snippets from the show set the scene before a pounding beat drifts in to drive a backdrop of soulful vocalisations and punchy rhythm for Big RASNA’s powerful vocal delivery to ride above plucked instrumental tones. Spinning impactful bars carrying defiant lyricism, “Summer House” is an anthemic curtain raiser to open the EP.
The delicate piano tones and vintage vocal sample of “Sully” follows, erupting into a vibrant blend of silky vocal flutters, pulsing bass lines and tapping percussion as the artist lays down his captivating vocal flow. Thumping bass injects energising aesthetic as the intensity of Big RASNA’s voice crafts a high-octane slice of cutting edge alternative hip hop music.
“Rules on Road” starts with bright staccato brass shots, joined by the punching snap of drums capped by the artist’s trademark flow. Packed with instantly memorable vocal hooks and shimmering aesthetic in the instrumental, it’s another highlight on the EP.
With “Lil Rick,” Big RASNA dips the energy with a smooth piano-driven outing that perfectly balances an elegant arrangement with potent vocal flair. With slick ebb and flow created with the rise and fall of the beat, Big RASNA’s storytelling lyrical writing truly shines on this superb track.
Next up, Big RASNA links with M.E.N.A.C.E. on “What Ya Life Like?” to deliver an emotionally-charged cut that pairs vibrant chords, rattling percussion and impassioned vocal delivery. Pulling you straight into the heart of the song via transportive lyrics, it’s an epic display of Big RASNA’s songwriting talent and his knack for creating thrilling collaborative works. The EP closes with “Outro,” a dreamy lo-fi hip hop track that wraps the release up with a hazy minute long chaser to perfectly bring the sensational debut EP to a conclusion.
