Based in Berlin, Germany, Calcou is a classically trained composer with a unique blend of influences, including jazz, chill, deep house and electronica. Born in Tübingen and now crafting his sonic vision in the German capital, Calcou’s diverse musical background stems from his work as a jazz pianist.
His creative output frames a meeting point where the sophistication of jazz collides with the fluidity of chill electronic music and the energy of deep house. Inspired by the works of Kiasmos, Bonobo, Christian Löffler, Caribou and Dj Koze, Calcou first made his entrance in 2019 with the debut single “Lfost” which was selected by the Berlin music commission to represent the city’s distinctive sound.
He’s since shared multiple well-received releases, racking up millions of streams while collaborating with artists such as GRIP TIGHT, Bastien, Astrolemo, egisson, Til Kolare and Mellowdine over the years. He recently announced the release of his first full-length record, his debut album titled Murmuration, set to drop soon.
Now, ahead of his upcoming debut full-length record, he brings us his first release of 2024, this time linking up with German singer-songwriter Thea Alien on the track “Wasteland.” Launching straight in to a smooth dwontempo electronica scene, the gently whirr of synths is punched by a clapping beat, setting up Thea Alien’s elegant voice to glide above as soft instrumental shots pepper the mix.
Spinning alluring melodies, drawing from her R&B-tinged style, Thea’s vocals cast subtle melancholy as the enveloping arrangement crafts a mesmeric listening experience. Driven by danceable energy and deep bass texture, “Wasteland” sees Calcou serve up another stellar collaboration as he builds the excitement for his forthcoming debut album.
Commenting on the single, Calcou shares, “Wasteland is about facing up to your own reality – and perhaps realising that sometimes it’s better to let go instead of clinging desperately to life choices or relationships that don’t move forward. This is often described as “failure”, but I also associate it with having the courage to tackle change. That’s why such moments always have something incredibly powerful and liberating for me”
