Based out of Vancouver Island in Canada, Parker Kay is an alternative R&B artist inspired by the sounds of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, John Mayer and other sonic legends he grew up listening to. First experimenting with making music on his older brother’s guitar, he went on to perform in TV singing contests as well as being involved in various creative projects.
When life got in the way, he took a step back from his musical pursuits but has since returned to go from strength to strength. 2020 saw him make his entrance with the debut single “Girl (Morning Path)” followed up by his breakout collaborative single “sorry, i like you too” with Burbank which has since racked up over five million streams on Spotify alone.
With three further singles dropped in 2021, he took a brief hiatus from releasing original music but now marks his return with his brand new single titled “The Grey.” Recounting the tale of a relationship gradually falling apart due to mixed signals and hazy communication, the single serves up an emotionally-charged and relatable sound via Parker Kay’s trademark pop-focused indie R&B sound.
Starting off with delicate acoustic guitar plucks, Parker’s soulful voice glides in to thread smooth melodies carrying storytelling lyricism via hushed delivery. Raising the tension with arpeggiated synth runs, the chorus bursts with the laid back snap of the beat, modulating synth textures and airy vocal leads that elegantly dance above.
Full of shimmering instrumentation, instantly catchy hooks and compelling lyrics that transport you straight to the heart of the song’s story, “The Grey” sees Parker Kay make an emphatic return to releasing music. With a sensational display of his wide appeal songwriting wrapped up in slick sound design, this track is sure to strike a chord with fans around the world and signal the start of the next chapter in Parker Kay’s exciting musical adventure.
