In the underground rap scene, Massachusetts-based artist Steve Brady, known by his moniker Kaspa, has been on a creative journey since his high school days in the late 90s. For Kaspa, music became a cathartic release, documenting his life’s highs and lows, serving as a vessel for his teenage experiences that evolved into a profound passion.
The artist’s story took a poignant turn, finding solace and escape in music after facing the loss of his grandfather, both parents to terminal illnesses and a close friend to overdose within a tragic three-year period. Over the last decade he’s been sharing his unique sonic vision with the world since dropping his debut record Found My Way in 2014, a captivating release that distilled his personal struggles, triumphs and everything in between to set Kaspa on an exciting creative adventure that would see him win over fans around the world.
Returning in 2017 with the follow up, his sophomore album Everything I Am built on his exceptional storytelling talents. Since then he’s gone on to release multiple singles and further LPs while collaborating with artists such as Copywrite, Cormega, Nature, Slaine, Minus, Masta Ace, Ruste Junx, Michael Bernier and many others along the way. Now he brings us his latest release with the new full-length album titled Beautiful Chaos, offering the perfect snapshot of the latest chapter in his sonic evolution. Featuring eleven tracks, the new record serves up Kaspa’s expansive sonic ambition delivered via his slick vocal flows, profound lyricism and creative arrangements.
Opened by “The Foreshadowing,” the album kicks off with a hazy sonic atmosphere of sweeping textures that at once pulls your attention into sharp focus while slipping you into a hypnotic state. The drifting instrumental piece draws on airy tones, distant vocal samples, soft piano and sparse percussive elements to craft an epic intro to the new album.
Next up, title track “Beautiful Chaos” continues the echo of delicate piano arrangement as Kaspa makes his vocal entrance. At first threading hushed bars, his delivery intensifies, amplified by the progressive instrumental backing as the track develops into an anthemic slice of moody alternative hip hop full of powerful crowd style backing vocals and capped by Kaspa’s trademark rapped leads.
“Apply Yourself” injects grooving rhythm with the snap of drums, warm piano chords and intricate instrumental elements paired with samples. Taking a reflective glance at the struggles and successes of his early school life, his meaningful lyrics hit hard to craft an emotionally-charged, storytelling listening experience.
Other highlights on the record include songs like “Choices” that sees Kaspa link up with twice Gold-certified producer C-Lance. Crafting a beat-driven sound of punching drums, vibrant instrumentation of piano and strings, Kaspa’s compelling vocal flows glide above to form a moving sound that immerses you in his trademark style.
“Why;Try” lays down another collaboration, this time with Lee Wilson who adds his vocal flair to Kaspa’s sound to spin a soulful outing. Kaspa’s razor-sharp rapped flow combines perfectly with Lee’s elegant melodic leads over a gentle beat and atmospheric instrumental, resulting in an instantly memorable sound that sees these two artists compliment each other’s styles in spectacular fashion.
Commenting on the release, he shares, “This album means so much to me. I was determined to make a true conceptual artistic project. Though I did track out all the songs for digital releasing purposes, the last track is the complete album from start to finish. The songs blend seamlessly together with no gaps. Playing like a movie, as it’s supposed to be consumed.”
