London-based outfit Lyra, formed in 2016, has been making a mark in the UK music scene through constant sonic evolution. Their music is an irresistible blend of infectious groove, smooth guitar work, bass fills and vocals that echo the soulful tones of 90s R&B.
Since starting out, Lyra has ventured on a journey of musical exploration, sharing their thrilling sound across a series of impressive releases. Their debut in 2016 with the single “Glad,” paired with tracks “Dominate” and “Realise,” marked the beginning of their musical adventure. Since 2019, they’ve continued to drop several singles, each adding a new piece to the puzzle of the Lyra world.
Translating their recorded music into compelling live performances, Lyra has played iconic London venues like The Bedford, Spice Of Life, Paper Dress Vintage, 229 and Camden Assembly. Their releases have received extensive radio support in the UK and beyond and they’ve shared the stage with notable acts such as Scouting For Girls, Blue and Sophie Ellis Bextor. Their upcoming support for BLOXX at The Bristol Exchange this month promises the next display of their electrifying stage presence.
Now they bring us their latest release with the brand new single titled “Rooftops,” a song written about finding love while in challenging circumstances. The song portrays a character realising the need to move on to a new chapter in life, signifying the end of an old one.
With “Rooftops,” Lyra sought to create an atmosphere reminiscent of sitting front and centre in the Royal Albert Hall. Departing from their previous recording strategies, the band entered the studio as a cohesive unit, recording foundational instruments together in one room, resulting in a self-produced masterpiece that showcases Lyra’s songwriting flair and performance panache.
Gently sliding in with bright piano plinks and slick guitar flickers, a laid back groove takes hold to cast a delicate backdrop for the soulful vocal leads to glide above. Over the mellow snap of drums, the blend of piano, skanked guitar chords and pizzicato strings softly rises and falls before hopping with intricate instrumental flourishes.
Capturing a truly heartfelt sound to reflect the lyrics, “Rooftops” flows with beautiful ebb and flow, injecting bluesy rock aesthetics with the crunch of distorted lead guitar licks. Building to an epic finale where a stunning guitar solo takes flight, Lyra serves up a memorable slice of their charming sound that’s impossible not to love.
