Coming out of Vancouver’s music scene, alternative soul artist Matt Storm blends a vintage aesthetic with jazz vibes wrapped up in a modern sound. A seasoned songwriter since the age of 13, his meaningful and authentic compositions reflect a depth beyond his years. As a genre hopping multi-instrumentalist, he crafts music that mirrors his unique upbringing being born in the USA, raised overseas and settling in Canada.
With extensive touring and collaborations with JUNO-nominated artists, Matt started out on a solo venture in 2016 with the release of his debut single, “Freedom of the Moment” which he followed up with several tracks in the build up to his 2018 debut record “Major 7th Medicine.” More singles and albums two and three have seen Matt continue to deliver a compelling musical output while racking up millions of streams on Spotify alone over the years.
Now working on a new EP titled SPLIT, a project set to drop later this year and draw on an experimental mix of sounds, he brings us his latest single with the track titled “APOLOGIZE.” Linking up with Grammy Award winner Ben Kane for the third time, who’s previously worked with the likes of D’angelo and Emily King, to mix the track, with his new single Mat Storm lays down a hazy jazz-infused jam.
Brought in by the patter of drums, shimmering guitar chords are met by airy vocalisations before the rhythm settles into a laid back groove. Soft keys, pulsing bass guitar and tapping percussion underpin his soulful vocals spinning smooth lines via hushed delivery.
Flowing through a smokey scene full of delicate instrumentation, alluring vocals and subtle grooves, “APOLOGIZE” is a stunning showcase of Matt Storm’s songwriting talent and performance panache. With a message of wellbeing, the song is written about themes of self-forgiveness and self-discovery, squaring struggles with depression to ultimately find inner pease. With this stellar new release and a new EP on the horizon, 2024 is shaping up to be another exciting year for this exciting artist.
