Dublin-based artist André Bangala, known under the artistic moniker Rocstrong, has for years been making a significant impact in the Irish music scene. With roots tracing back to the Congo, Rocstrong crafts a sound that cuts across genres, fusing pop, rock and soul into a compelling musical output.
Drawing inspiration from iconic artists like Childish Gambino, Andre 3000 and Frank Ocean, for over a decade he’s been sharing his original sonic vision, kicked off with his debut single “Limits” back in 2014. Since then he’s dropped multiple well-received singles and two EPs while winning over fans and tastemakers alike around the world.
His 2016 single “Go Head” featured in the Coen Brothers’ film Hail Caesar and became the soundtrack for a major Lidl campaign supporting women’s Gaelic games. McDonald’s and Seat also licensed his music for their campaigns, further showcasing the global appeal of Rocstrong’s thrilling music. Amidst a hiatus during the pandemic, Rocstrong is now back with a bang, announcing the release of his highly anticipated debut album, Road Trip FM, set to drop in June.
Offering a taste of what’s to come and bringing us his first new original music in six years, he shares his brand new single titled “Moon,” featuring the talented vocalist Tolü Makay. Serving up a pop-focused sound that flows from delicate folk inspired aesthetic to bold indie rock of anthemic proportions, “Moon” sees Rocstrong make a spectacular return with an utterly incredible new song. Started off with the gentle strums of acoustic guitar, soft vocalisations hint at the soulful journey ahead as Rocstrong’s smooth vocal leads drift across the delicate arrangement.
Threading elegant melodies and picture painting lyricism, lush string textures add a hazy vibe to the dreamy soundscape. Peppered with intricate instrumental textures and guitar layers, the song gradually builds up before the song launches with crunching guitars propelled by the thump of drums as Rocstrong’s voice takes flight, backed by lively whoops and the stunning call and response style vocals of Tolü Makay, overlapping beautifully with Rocstrong performance.
Injected with slick lead electric guitar flickers and driven by a powerful sound, the song reaches a rousing finale that’s sure to strike a chord with fans around the world. With his upcoming debut full-length record on the horizon, Rocstrong has made an emphatic return to the music world and we can’t wait to see what he’s got in store for 2024 and beyond.
