Originally hailing from Hawaii, Sara Beth Yurow is now a rising artist based in Los Angeles, infusing her music with authentic writing and a unique sound drawn from diverse influences. With roots in songwriting dating back to the age of 10 and a versatile skill set that includes playing the guitar and mastering Classical Italian Voice, Sara Beth Yurow is an artist who thrives on creative exploration.
Her journey into the professional entertainment world began as a backup singer for Rachel Platten during the 2016 ESPN Pro Bowl Pregame Show, offering her a glimpse of the stage that fuelled her artistic passion. Subsequent endeavours, from appearances on Hawai’i Five-0 to representing Susan Page Modelling in Disney World, laid the foundation for Sara’s journey as a solo artist.
Her debut single, “Twenty One Night Stands,” released last summer was produced by 2x Grammy Nominee Natalia Bortolotti and saw her make an emphatic entrance to the music scene via a fusion of electronic and pop elements. Followed up by her sophomore single “Cuz I’m in Luv,” last September, she now brings us her latest release with her debut EP titled Mischievous.
Filtering her inspirations from artists like Paramore, Evanescence and Avril Lavigne through her own unique sonic lens, the six tracks on the EP were written everywhere, from the 720 LA Metro going to Santa Monica to Kalaniana’ole Highway on her way to serve fast food to tourists to even finding the creative spark while in the shower. Opened by her debut single, “Twenty One Night Stands,” the EP kicks off with thumping beats, deep bass tones and colourful synth tones. As the music momentarily mellows, Sara’s vocals take the spotlight, revealing a delicate soundscape enriched with subtle R&B nuances. The energy builds up with fluttering synths in the chorus, wrapping the listener in a shimmering alternative pop sound as Sara’s soulful vocals thread infectious leads above.
“Spin” injects gritty rock edge with the crunch of distorted guitar rides splashing drums and pulsing bass lines as her bouncy vocal leads craft a high-octane journey of catchy pop-focused rock music. Cutting between subdued verses, the anticipation swiftly rises to burst into rousing choruses of anthemic sound full of pure energy and memorable melodic hooks.
With “Don’t Wanna Be Strong,” Sara serves up an epic sound of pop punk that flows from delicate arrangements of softly tapped drums and elegant guitar plucks in the verse to the stabbed chords and lofty vocal lines of the chorus. Capped by slick lead guitar flourishes and backed by fuzzy instrumental tones, Sara’s voice soars above to craft a defiant and empowering musical moment.
Next up, “What About” casts an enchanting sonic spell with graceful piano plinks weaving above Sara’s alluring vocalisations, resulting in a downtempo pop sound. Gradually progressing with the patter of a electronic drum kit as the tumbling piano notes are met with piquant synth tones to create a colourful and emotive piece.
“Cuz I’m in Luv” delivers a breezy indie pop outing driven by the laid back shuffle of drums as bright ukulele strums pair with Sara’s dancing vocals. It’s a charming sound that offers the perfect fusion of her Hawaiin roots and her innovative pop music output. The EP closes with an alternative version of her debut single, bringing the release full circle by shining “Twenty One Night Stands” in a different light to conclude Sara Beth Yurow’s compelling debut EP with one final moment of her stellar sound.
