Coming out of the indie rock scene of Los Angeles, Maudlin Strangers is a project led by Jake Hays since starting out back in 2010. Evolving from a solo endeavour to a collective venture with close friends Jeff Lehrer, Kenny Benson and Richie Gonzales, the band struck a chord with the debut Overdose EP via BMG/Vagrant Records in 2015.
The subsequent tour with Bad Suns and Cold War Kids established Maudlin Strangers as a rising act before a brief hiatus in 2016. Last year, the band returned with a new lineup, featuring original member Richie Gonzales, Alexander “Schmorgle” Morgan and Drew Bruchs.
The single “I’m Not In The Right Mind” marked their triumphant comeback and crystallised their return as an exciting band with a unique sound. Now they bring us their latest release with the new single “Don’t Worry, I’m Fine,” a song that captures the exhaustion and burnout felt from frontman and songwriter Jake Hays.
Channelling an Arctic Monkeys indie rock sound, with their new single the band serves up a slick sound driven by punchy drums, bold guitar tones and capped by rich lead vocals. Bright instrumental shots give way to a fuzzy riff over the strike of drums before settling into the verse where Jake’s commanding vocals hover above the thump of the beat.
Intricate guitar touches and echoing backing vocals ring out as the song builds to the chorus where the full energy bursts with catchy hooks delivered with laid back swagger resulting in a memorable sound of anthemic indie rock. A superb balance of pounding sonic energy and smooth vocal performance sees Maudlin Strangers continue their resurgence in spectacular fashion.
Commenting on the song, Jake Hays shares, “I took a long hiatus and always kicked myself for it, but I realised it was all necessary to make it to the point where I am now, mentally. Sometimes you have to give yourself time to reflect to figure out truly what it is that you want, and what will make you happy.”
