London-based trio The Howlers have become synonymous with broodingly emotive and ferocious live performances, earning them critical acclaim and confirming their status as one of the most exciting acts in the UK music scene and beyond. With support from Official Charts UK, The Independent, BBC Radio 1, BBC 6 Music, CLASH, KEXP, and features in popular TV shows like Brooklyn 99, Alex Rider, Match of The Day and Soccer AM, you’ve likely already heard and enjoyed their music without knowing it.
Drawing inspiration from a diverse range of influences from Ennio Morricone and John Williams’ film scores to Tinariwen and artists like Kurt Vile, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Father John Misty, The Howlers craft their own highly original sound. Their debut single, “La Dolce Vita,” released in 2019, marked the beginning of their sonic exploration, followed by a series of singles and EPs.
Now, on the cusp of their debut full-length record, titled What You’ve Got to Lose to Win It All, set to drop in May, the band is poised to deliver a fifteen-track album themed on resilience, friendship and unconditional love amid pain, with production by Black Honey. Now bringing us the third single lifted from the forthcoming LP, they share the new song titled “Cowboys Don’t Cry.”
On the new song, frontman Adam opens up in an honest display of vulnerable songwriting, reflecting on the challenges of adolescence and the difficulties his parents faced during that period. Threading his poignant songwriting through a bright indie rock sound, “Cowboys Don’t Cry” flows from the delicate acoustic guitar strums and pattering percussion carrying a softly swaying rhythm as Adam’s rich vocals cast compelling melodies above, to the anthemic chorus brimming with lively energy, rousing instrumentation and instantly memorable hooks.
With the playful run of plucked bass notes, the song launches into a shimmering sound of shuffling drums, lightly gritty guitars and stunning vocals that soar above, resulting in an epic showcase of their enduring indie sound. Fiercely catchy and moving, “Cowboys Don’t Cry” sees The Howlers continue to go from strength to strength while building the hype for their upcoming debut record.
