Hailing from Berkshire in the UK, Subsets is a talented producer making electronic and ambient music. With a penchant for blending electronic and traditional instruments, Subsets creates hypnotic soundscapes that draw from various genres, with inspiration from deep house, future garage, drum and bass and beyond.
First unveiling his sound in 2016 with Introspection EP, he’s since dropped a plethora of singles and EPs as well as his 2020 full-length record Unfamiliar Echoes. Linking with several artists on collaborative releases over the years, he’s worked with the likes of Histibe, Whithe, Lika Bugaeva, Jellis, Roger Wilco, CASHFORGOLD, Ayelle and many others while racking up millions of spins of his music online.
His music has earned acclaim and recognition, with tracks featured on renowned compilations from the illustrious Café del Mar label and support from platforms such as BBC Radio 1Xtra’s Jamz Supernova, Nest HQ, BBC Introducing, Drum & Bass Arena and EDM.com. Now he brings us his latest release with the brand new single titled “Onyx,” the first release in a new series of tracks that take name and inspiration from gemstones.
Reflecting the darker hues of the onyx stone cut with lighter bands, the new track veers to the darker side sonically in the series threaded with a subtle air of brightness stitched throughout. Brought in by soft synth tones floating through an expansive atmosphere, the track gently builds as the laid back snap of the beat and distant, pitched vocal samples combine to craft an enveloping dark ambient soundscape.
Cutting through the mix, the light twang of guitar tones add colourful brushstrokes to the canvas, resulting in a dreamy listening experience full of sweeping melody and immersive sound design. Flowing with playful synth leads while retaining the washing sense of reverb-drenched euphoria, “Onyx” is a stunning slice of electronica that hints at an exciting body of linked releases on the horizon for this talented producer.
