The Heavy North is a talented rock outfit from Liverpool in the UK, featuring the skills of frontman Kenny Stuart, guitarist and producer Jose Ibanez, Andrew Horrocks on bass, guitarist Jack Birch, Ste Penn on keys and Mark Rice on drums. First unveiling their sound in 2018 with their debut single “Don’t You Wait For Me,” their first festival performance at Liverpool International Music Festival in 2019 kick started their breakout year.
Over the years they’ve gone from strength to strength with multiple critically acclaimed releases including 2020’s EP Dive Bar Blues and their first full-length record Electric Soul Machine in 2022 as well as several singles and their most recent album Delta Shakedown last year. Bringing their music alive on stage, they’ve previously enjoyed a headline UK tour which included a sold out hometown show at Liverpool’s Arts Club Theatre where they performed their debut album in full, joined by a twelve-piece backing band.
Following their last album, they now bring us their latest release with a live recording of “The Genie,” a song that first appeared on their debut LP. Recorded at the band’s show at the Camp and Furnace in Liverpool last December, the song is the first single lifted from The Heavy North’s upcoming debut live album titled Fire In The Furnace, set to drop in August.
Backed by the twelve-piece band, The Heavy North serve up a sensational rendition of the song that threads their superb songwriting through a grandiose arrangement performance. Launching straight in with the stab of guitar notes backed by brass tones and the punch of the drums, the verse settles into a grooving rock sound capped by soulful vocal leads.
Flowing with funky guitar flourishes, lush backing vocals and gorgeous string textures, the chorus casts an enchanting and anthemic sound before diving back into the stomping rhythms and gritty guitar tones of the verse. Frontman Kenny Stuart lays down a truly exquisite performance, lifted by the incredible talents of a group of musicians operating at the very highest level.
Injecting electrifying blues flair with the guitar solo, the song builds to an emphatic finale peppered with bold brass flickers and a euphoric swell of instrumentation and vocals, resulting in a dazzling listening experience that any music fan is sure to love. Paired with the new live single is the video that captures the performance in all its glory which will also feature on the full-length concert film that’s set to accompany the upcoming live album later this year.
