Hailing from Las Cruces in New Mexico, Orlando Madrid is swiftly establishing himself as an exciting new figure in the world of jazz, known for his soulful and innovative ability on the alto saxophone. His musical story has taken him from prestigious halls to intimate jazz clubs, jazz festivals, schools and concert halls all over the USA as well as in Asia, charming audiences with his performances and original compositions.
Having earned an Artist Diploma from NYU, where he studied under the guidance of Mike Rodriguez, Chris Potter, Dave Liebman and Rich Perry, at the end of last year, he captured his original sound in the studio and shared it with the world for the first time via his debut single “Never for Ever.” Quickly followed up by singles two and three, he now brings us his first full-length record with the eight-track album titled From This Moment Forward.
The album showcases Orlando’s unique voice as a composer and saxophonist, featuring a collection of original compositions with one from pianist Arnie Sainz. Backed by a stellar lineup of musicians, including the legendary trumpeter and Grammy Award nominee Mike Rodriguez, Orlando lays down a delightful display of modern jazz music.

Opened by the debut single “Never for Ever,” the intricate taps of percussion set a playful jazz scene as the smooth duet of saxophone and trumpet glide in. Backed by the soft tones of piano, gently shuffling roll of drums and plucked bass lines, Orlando Madrid joined by Mike Rodriguez craft a lightly grooving sound peppered with stunning leads on the sax, trumpet guitar and piano across over seven minutes of exquisite modern jazz music.
Linking with Mike again on the second track “Blue and Gold,” they serve up an uptempo jam full of lively brass runs, bouncy rhythm and dancing sax solos. Maintaining the consistency of their readily apparent sonic chemistry while showcasing a different side of Orlando’s composition talent, it’s a superb outing brought to life by exceptional musicianship. Other highlights include songs like “Quintessential,” a laid back piece built of the slow sway of pattering percussion and silky stretched sax lines. It’s the perfect taste of Orlando Madrid taking the lead for a beautiful solo song, delivering his stellar instrumental writing via assured performance full of virtuoso skill and delicate dynamic flow.
Collaborating with Mike Rodriguez again on “Enjoy It While It Lasts,” soft sustained guitar tones are met with subtle cymbal taps and bright piano plinks as the song gradually slips into a downtempo scene. Fluttering guitar notes ride above the ebb and flow of the lilting rhythm as piano chords back flourishes of dazzling sax leads. The record closes with “Right Flank,” a piece composed by Arnie Sainz who joins Orlando Madrid and Mike Rodriguez for the final outing on the album. With these three instrumental masters jamming out the upbeat and colourful piece, they deliver a sensational finale to Orlando’s incredible first record.

Hey Orlando, how’s things?
I am truly blessed and thankful for my good health and eagerness to learn more. The release of my debut album is a significant achievement for me, and I am filled with inspiration and motivation to continue pursuing my dreams.
What’s your earliest memory of making music?
My earliest memory of making music was when I began taking saxophone lessons with my first teacher, Tony Montano. He played a major role in my musical journey and is the reason I still play today. As a teacher, he was very inspiring and had a great love and passion for music. He continues to perform in Las Cruces with his band, Steppin’ Up, as well as other musical groups.
Which artists do you draw most inspiration from?
I draw inspiration from so many musicians and artists today. I am in love with all music and truly believe that if it comes from a sincere and passionate place then it resonates with me. To name a few, Charlie Parker, Cannonball Adderley, Sonny Stitt, Kenny Garrett, Dick Oatts, Vincent Herring, Dave Liebman, Steve Wilson, Ted Nash, Chris Potter, Dyana Stephens, Eric Alexander, Joshua Redman, Miguel Zenon, Mike Rodriguez, Marquis Hill, Barry Harris. The list can go on and on!
How else do you find inspiration for your music?
I find inspiration through daily life. My ups and my downs. Experiences that navigate us through life have so much richness in it. As well as people and souls I meet along the way.
What was your highlight of the year for 2023?
Getting the album finished and together has been the highlight. I’m so honoured to have performed on it with some of the best NYC musicians on the scene. I’m lucky to call them my friends and musicians that I look up to. There are no words to explain how honoured I am to have Mike Rodriguez on the album. He is one of today’s most prolific voices not only on the trumpet but in composition and improvisation.
What would you say is the perfect setting for listeners to enjoy your sound?
Live is always best but to enjoy the album with a great pair of headphones or speakers is ideal.
How has your own style and sound evolved since you started out?
It’s become more personal. I feel that I am continuing to develop my sound, ideas and musical language the more I work on it everyday. With so many life experiences, good and bad, that has all helped to develop my sound for sure.
Who would be your dream artist to collaborate with?
I have gotten to collaborate with one already, Mike Rodriguez but really any musician and giant would be an honour. Love to play and learn. Truly feel that you can learn in any situation from any human being or experience.
How did you find making your new album ‘From This Moment Forward’?
It started off as a project while getting my artist diploma at NYU in 2022 and then evolved to a beautiful get together with some of my favourite people and musicians.
What message did you want to get across with this release?
The message here is that everyone makes mistakes or has moments where their judgment isn’t the best, but how you respond to and learn from these moments is crucial. The key is to keep getting up and moving forward, time and time again. Having resilience and perseverance is everything in life. ‘From This Moment Forward’ symbolises a new beginning, and I truly believe that anyone can change for the better.
How did you find working with Mike Rodriguez on the album?
While I was attending NYU for an Artist Diploma I had the privilege of performing in his Latin Jazz and Combo. I learned so much from him and continue to do so not only about music but about life. He is an inspiration and you can hear it in his playing and beautiful career, he also happens to be hilarious as well and does a killing Rocky impression haha!
What artist have you been listening to most recently?
I would say I have been really loving my former teacher, Chris Potter’s new album. It’s incredible. I have also been listening to alot of Kenny Garrett, Charlie Parker, Beethoven String Quartets, The Sacred Souls, Eddie Palmieri, Wayne Shorter, Herbie Hancock, and Andrew Gould’s recent album!
What’s the main thing you want people to get out of listening to your music?
I would say hope. As well as just an enjoyable experience listening to the way things come together. Was so proud of the way it came together.
You’ve played all over the world, what’s been your favourite live performance so far?
I will always cherish the high school performance on the Great Wall of China. Performing at Terraza 7 in NYC was beautiful! Many times at Shrine/Silvana and Penny Jo’s. My favourite was one night at Penny Jo’s, there’s a video on my instagram @omadrid23!
Do you have any advice for a new artist wanting to follow your footsteps?
Don’t ever give up on your dreams. Anything is possible. Keep working. Find inspiration from within and listen to your heroes. Don’t ever be scared to ask for help. Anything is possible!
Finally, what do you have lined up for the rest of 2024?
I am in the works of trying to book an album release concert in NYC. Performing at Birdland would be a dream come true. If anyone has a connection there please help out. Honestly anywhere in NYC would be a dream to be honest. Smalls/Mezzrow or Birdland!
I am also writing for my second album as well, so that is incredibly exciting!
