isabeltate arrives as a promising new artist project formed by Isabel Damiani and Tate Chavez, whose collaborative efforts infuse poignant lyricism and bedroom production to construct a musical world reflective of their shared experiences. The story of isabeltate stems back to the crossing of Isabel and Tate paths during a Balinese gamelan class at UC Berkeley.
Despite pursuing different academic paths – Isabel in business and Tate in economics – they found common ground in their shared dissatisfaction with their career trajectories and a mutual love for music. It wasn’t until years later, while studying music production at Icon Collective in Los Angeles, that they met again, sparking a creative collaboration born out of a desire for escape through music.
During the Covid-19 lockdown in 2020, the pair began experimenting with musical collaboration, exchanging ideas remotely. Their unique backgrounds and experiences at Berkeley laid the foundation for their creative synergy, which flourished as they dived into writing and producing music together while taking cues from electronic-influenced pop acts like Kllo, Mura Masa and Jai Paul.
The culmination of their collaborative efforts resulted in the upcoming EP titled Carpool, a six-track project that distils their evolving friendship. isabeltate now make their official artistic entrance and unveil their sonic vision with the debut single titled “Upside Down,” the first in a trio of singles released in the build up to the EP, set to drop in July.
With meaningful writing and blissful melodies, their debut single thematically revolves around the complexities of relationships. Opened by Isabel’s alluring voice, delicately drifting above soft clean guitar tones and airy sonic textures, the song casts an intimate soundscape full of beautiful melodies and dreamy aesthetic.
Injecting laid back rhythm with the intricate snap of an electronic beat, overlapping vocals flutter above shimmering instrumentation, resulting in a enchanting alternative pop experience that builds to a danceable energy with the shuffle of drums and lush arrangement. It’s a sensational first statement from this exciting new duo, one that lays down their songwriting talent and ability to bring to life their charming sound in dazzling fashion. With two more singles lined up for their debut EP arrives this summer, 2024 is sure to be a breakout year for isabeltate.
Commenting on the single, Isabel shares, “Upside Down represents my favourite part of making music – it was us just going with the flow and not overthinking the process. We brought in Tate’s double bass and had fun improvising with a bunch of harmonies to build the chorus.” With Tate adding, “Isabel and I really got to know each other by writing these songs together. Beyond an EP, ‘Carpool’ is a sonic manifestation of the process by which our friendship was built.”
