Newcomer TE/MO is a Chicago-based alternative pop artist and singer-songwriter who recently stepped into the music scene with a unique fusion of haunting melodies and profound lyricism. Exploring poetry and songwriting since she was twelve years old, TE/MO has shied away from sharing her sonic output until finally making her artistic entrance earlier this year.
Her music, aptly described as “spooky pop,” combines elements of classical music with candid and meaningful lyrics, ranging from the whimsical to the deep and reflective. Following the release of her debut single “MOTHER I” in March, TE/MO unveiled her sophomore single “Mother III” last month and now brings us her first EP titled MOTHER, a six-track release that distils her mesmerising avant-garde pop sound into a stunning listening experience.
MOTHER presents a deeply personal tale of resilience and self-discovery. Each track dissects themes of betrayal, identity and empowerment, connecting with audiences, particularly women aroudnt he world, in a powerful way. TE/MO’s honesty and vulnerability shine through as she invites listeners to join her in exploring their own experiences of adversity and triumph.
Starting the release with the brief intro piece “a lullaby: when you arrive,” a lo-fi sound of filtered vocals and instrumental chimes, chopped and spliced, sets up the musical journey ahead. The soft piano tones of debut single “Mother I” follows, crafting an atmospheric and stripped back soundscape as TE/MO’s elegant voice drifts in to thread storytelling lyricism via beautiful melodies. Over the rising arrangement of gentle cymbal sweeps, intricate plucks and warm string swells, TE/MO’s dazzling vocal performance soars to deliver a truly spectacular sound.
The ethereal piece “an interlude: endoMe” flows from a moody and brooding soundscape of rumbling bass textures and dark ambient aesthetic before giving way to layers of airy vocal chanting. Peppered with delicate instrumental flourishes and samples, it’s an immersive moment that showcases the depth of TE/MO’s creativity and sound design talent.
“Mother II” sees distant vocal lines sliding into a blend of deep pulsing percussion and distant pizzicato string plucks before the brush of cymbal ushers an enveloping sound of marching rhythm and hazy instrumentation. With her voice rising in intensity, she delivers a theatrical sound full of emotive lyrical writing and an incredible arrangement that reaches an emphatic crescendo of powerfully belted vocals before floating back down to a graceful finale of soft tones and tender vocals.
With “Mother III,” TE/MO serves up the more pop-focused side of her sonic vision with an uptempo slice of catchy pop rock sound. Built up by punching drums and a backdrop that bends from bright piano plinks to driving guitars all capped by the artist’s sensational vocals spinning instantly memorable melodies, it’s a stellar conclusion to TE/MO’s truly worthy debut EP.
