Launching his creative endeavour during the pandemic, producer BroBroCookDatUp has swiftly become a notable figure in the instrumental music sphere. Based in Charlotte, North Carolina, his journey into music production was initially a personal remedy for combatting mental health struggles. This creative outlet was particularly beneficial during a challenging period when he was relocating most of his family to Pennsylvania. His ability to channel personal hardship into artistic creation has won over listeners and established him as a versatile and intriguing talent.
BroBroCookDatUp draws influence from a diverse array of artists, including Hit-Boy, Rance 1500, BNYX, Travis Scott, Mike Dean, Incubus and John Mayer to create his unique musical output. This mix has informed his constantly evolving sound, which he first shared with the world through his 2021 debut album SpaceTrap Beats Vol. 1. Since then, he’s delivered an impressive discography, catching the attention of fans and tastemakers alike around the world.
His latest release, the six-track EP titled I Need to Heal, is a stellar showcase of his growth as an artist and his mission of creating music that serves a therapeutic purpose. This EP is instilled with meditative, calming, nostalgic and subtly melancholic sounds, aiming to remind listeners of the importance of rest in the fast pace of the modern world. Having started producing to cope with depression and isolation himself, the artist aspires to create a safe space for healing through his music. Reflecting on the higher average male suicide rate, he notes, “I think it’s because we don’t feel that there are enough ‘safe spaces’ for us to be vulnerable enough to heal. I want this EP to be a safe space for somebody to heal like it has been for me.”
The project was created in BroBroCookDatUp’s home studio, with help from friends and family, adding a layer of intimacy and community to the music. Opened by “Hydrated,” soft instrumental textures gently drift through a hypnotic scene as the delicate rattle of percussion is gradually introduced. Flowing with intricate tones that contrasts stretched lines with bright plucks, it’s a dreamy listening experience of enveloping lo-fi music.
Title track “I Need to Heal” sees BroBroCookDatUp lean into the more intimate side of his sonic vision with a playful sound of lightly grooving rhythms and gentle layers of colourful instrumentation. Riding the shuffling of the drums, upbeat flutters cast a pattering backdrop as warm brass tones float across the arrangement.
Other highlights on the EP include the artist’s own personal favourite track “Unk” which features his uncle’s piano loop and vocals courtesy of his daughter to produce a heartfelt family collaboration of downtempo jazz-tinged music. From start to finish, the EP presents a highly original and thoroughly enjoyable experience that puts BroBroCookDatUp’s creativity and production flair on full display as he continues to deliver compelling music on his musical adventure.
